DESCRIPTIONRevelle College is the first of seven undergraduate colleges established at the University of California, San Diego and was named in honor of Roger Revelle, noted for his research on global warming and a major force in the founding of UC San Diego. The colleges are distinguished by their general education curriculum, and Revelle College is known for the breadth, depth and rigor of its general education requirements, which include humanities, mathematics, language, natural science, social science, and fine arts. Students at Revelle College are actively engaged and involved in a variety of student programs and activities. Revelle College is home to approximately 5000 undergraduate students. Assist the Dean of Academic Advising in managing operations and personnel for the advising unit. Supervise staff and oversee daily operation, administration, and management of the unit. Participate in the development and implementation of new programs, policies, and procedures affecting Revelle undergraduates. Assume full responsibility for the management of the unit in the absence of the Dean andrepresent the Dean at college and campus levels. Assist with the academic standing review process and develop strategies to assist students in academic difficulty. Oversee, develop, and implement academic orientation and enrollment programs for new students. Other responsibilities include student advising and counseling, degree audits, readmission counseling, and coordination of academic advising programs and events. - This position is required to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
QUALIFICATIONSSubstantial professional experience in a college academic advising environment. Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools. Knowledge of educational theory and principles and experience in practical application of counseling techniques. Demonstrated leadership skills in advising functions. Proven skill in evaluating academic records. Thorough knowledge of college / school policies, procedures, and requirements. Knowledge and skill in interpreting and implementing college and University policies and procedures. Creative organizational ability in terms of conception, development, implementation, and evaluation of college and campus programs. Ability to supervise a diverse staff. Skill in selecting, training, and evaluating staff and students and the ability to prioritize job tasks for self and staff. Knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures. Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving. Strong counseling skills, including demonstrated excellence in active listening and in helping individuals with problem identification, problem solving, conflict resolution, and decision making. Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Tact and discretion in referring students to other student services personnel. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to present comprehensive and detailed information clearly and concisely. Ability to speak well in public. Ability to multi-task. Ability to work independently, prioritize and multi-task with frequent interruptions. Ability to set long- and short-term goals, excellence with "big picture" concepts and details to implement programs. Ability to develop and present effective training materials and to develop appropriate advising strategies for specific populations and individuals. Demonstrated ability to organize and conduct meetings, workshops, seminars, etc. Experience and skill in facilitating group interactions. Experience with computer programs for word processing, e-mail, and student tracking and monitoring. Ability to utilize technology to support the mission and goals of academic advising. Tact and diplomacy in working with diverse populations including students, parents, faculty, campus administrators and the public. Detailed knowledge of academic, career, international, and other services at Revelle College, UC San Diego, other UC campuses, and similar institutions preferred.
