Middle School Teacher of History

Position Classification: Full Time (10 months), Faculty, Salaried Exempt      

Hours: MS school day is 7:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m.; after-school/weekend hours dependent on involvement in extracurricular activities

Reports to: Head of Middle School

Position Summary: St. Christopher’s Middle School seeks a dynamic educator with the ability  to teach and lead students across the entire Middle School history curriculum.  In addition, the successful candidate will be an effective advisor and capable activity leader or coach of an athletic team.

Qualifications & Key Skills:  

• Candidates must hold at least a bachelor’s degree in history or a closely related field
• A minimum of three years teaching experience is preferred
• A thorough knowledge of the discipline
• An understanding of the vital role of research, writing, and historical analysis in preparing students for the Upper School
• A familiarity and ease with integrating technology into the classroom
• An ability to collaborate effectively with members of the department and the Middle School faculty to enhance students’ appreciation and understanding of history
• A desire to introduce multiple perspectives and a diverse set of backgrounds as they pertain to the topics and lessons
• An ability to enhance in students the School’s Essential Qualities such as creative thinking and problem solving, technological savvy, intellectual curiosity and risk taking, research and analysis, collaboration and teamwork, and the ability to apply core knowledge to new and changing situations
• An enthusiasm for nurturing global awareness and empathy in students in each class to strengthen these two essential skills
• An excitement to commit fully to the St. Christopher's community and the lives of our boys through participation in one or more after-school activities

Principal Responsibilities: 

• Teaching a full academic course load (four classes with one or two preps) 

• Candidates should be prepared to teach in more than one grade level (6-8th)

• Advising (eight to ten students)

• Coaching or leading a significant co-curricular activity

• Handling other duties (study halls, recess, etc.) as assigned

• Participating in the life of the School through committee work and regular presence at major school events as a means of supporting the students and the mission of the School

• Communicating in a timely and efficient manner with parents, as appropriate

• Staying abreast of best practices for teaching boys
