Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) shapes, advances and stewards a world-class undergraduate academic experience for students at the University of Washington. Within UAA, Undergraduate Academic Advising works primarily with students who are exploring and undecided or preparing for entrance into a major. UA Advising is a primary campus contact for prospective transfer students, working closely with the community and technical colleges in Washington State. UA Advising is the UW’s centralized advising office, providing leadership and support to advisers, departments, and student service units around the institution in the areas of academic advising practice and policy. UA Advising works closely with First Year Programs, Academic Support Programs, and other campus partners to support advising and orientation programming along with tutoring and course support for students. UAA Advising collaborates extensively around campus, particularly with college and departmental advisers, student services offices, and key campus event organizers. Along with Academic Support Programs and the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity’s Academic Counseling Services, UA Advising is physically located at the heart of the university, within the Center for Undergraduate Advising, Diversity, and Student Success (CUADSS) at Mary Gates Hall. UA Advising has an outstanding opportunity for a dynamic, service-oriented, and student-centered individual to join our team as an Academic Adviser. We aim to build a diverse pool of experienced candidates from a range of academic and professional backgrounds. The right candidate will join a collaborative, purposeful team of professionals excited to play an instrumental role in the lives of students by helping them make informed academic choices, and supporting their experiences at the UW and beyond. This appointment is expected to be funded for three years with a possibility of extension. Candidates for the Academic Adviser position must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of many social, economic, cultural, gender, ideological, racial and ethnic backgrounds. RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of UA Advising, the Academic Adviser will: Advise and assist students, in a variety of direct advising settings (1:1, drop-in, group, remote), in understanding academic options, degree requirements, and university policies and procedures. Guide and support students in making informed choices, developing their academic identities, and crafting successful academic plans. Foster innovation in advising practicing by experimenting with new models and methods of advising the large and diverse UW pre-major student population. Work with a diverse cohort of pre-major students, providing: Perform administrative management of advising work (including the recording of notes, appointment preparation, appointment follow-up, referrals, responding to advising-related email, and other documentation). Support Advising & Orientation activities for new transfer and incoming freshman students through participation in presentations, workshops, and events for new students and parents. Develop and disseminate advising-relevant information through a wide range of communication channels including print materials, UAA websites, blogs, social media, and other channels and venues. Support the goals and functions of the advising office through administrative tasks, support and coordination of events, basic projects, collaboration with partners across campus, and other duties as assigned.
