Assistant Dean and Dean of Students

The Assistant Dean and Dean of Students manages the Dean of Students (DOS) Office. The Dean of Students promotes the well-being of students within the law school and the university communities and sets the strategic vision for how the DOS Office can most effectively support students in a demanding pre-professional program, starting with new student (1L) and transfer orientations and spanning through Commencement. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Student Services.

The Dean of Students Office works with faculty and other Harvard Law School (HLS) administrative offices to orient 1,800 students to law school life, and to provide resources and counseling on a variety of matters that may arise in both students' academic and personal lives.

As Assistant Dean and Dean of Students you will:

• Create programming that enriches the student experience and enhances the academic mission by fostering personal development in a professional environment.

• Offer opportunities for engagement for non-traditional students and those whose responsibilities beyond HLS might limit the time they can spend developing relationships and pursuing connections on campus.

• Provide particular programming that relates to Bar application logistics and questions or concerns about the Bar's character and fitness process.

• Guide students on how to access HLS and University resources, including but not limited to: academic support, wellness programming and mental health counseling, and referrals to the Title IX Office and to ADA accommodation services.

• Meet regularly with individual students to help them navigate and connect with other HLS student services offices focusing on admissions, financial services, public and private career advising, and community engagement.

• Serve as a resource and advocate for students who are engaged in Administrative Board proceedings (a board comprised of faculty, staff, and students who are charged with handling exceptions to academic and administrative rules and student discipline), and supervise the Secretary of the Administrative Board, who is a member of the DOS staff.

• Oversee planning and execution of major events which may range in size from a few hundred to multiple thousand. Examples include Orientation, Commencement, Section Dinners, Barrister's Ball, 1L Pub Night, Cooking Classes, and pre-exam Pancake Breakfast. This includes developing content and structure, publicity, coordination with other Harvard offices and groups and logistical details.

• Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment.

• Develop, manage and oversee departmental budget and oversee financial compliance for staff and projects. Ensure compliance with University policies and procedures and applicable legal rules and regulations.
