The Yale University School of Nursing (www.nursing.yale.edu) invites applications from (and nominations of) highly qualified faculty for the position of Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion, at the rank of associate professor/professor in either the clinical or tenure track. Successful candidates must possess an earned doctoral degree and at least two years of related experience with progressive responsibility in diversity and inclusion work in academia, healthcare, private sector or government. A Nursing degree is preferred.
Our definition of equity in this position includes efforts to support social justice, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism/anti-oppression, and reconciliation. The ADE is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive equity approach across the school in teaching, practice, research and service in collaboration with YSN administrators, faculty, staff and students. YSN is seeking candidates with a demonstrated track record of successful leadership for strategic planning and implementation of institutional equity, with a proven record of organizational and cultural change.
The ADE collaborates with universityâ€�wide equity experts to ensure that programming is complementary to Yale Universityâ€™s goals while also helping to establish and revise school and university policies as needed. The ADE consults with faculty, staff and student committees and groups regarding priority equity initiatives. The ADE is a member of YSNâ€™s Senior Leadership team and oversees the schoolâ€™s Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) and staff. This is a faculty position, and the incumbent is expected to contribute to and lead scholarly works surrounding equity. The ideal candidate will be an imaginative and creative individual who thrives in a collaborative and complex environment with high expectations and standards, with demonstrated leadership and managerial abilities, outstanding scholarly accomplishments and successful experience facilitating equity initiatives.
Key Responsibilities will include:
1. Assume a leadership role for building and fostering equity at YSN as defined by YSNâ€™s community of students, faculty, staff, alumni and community partners. 2. Supervise and work closely with the Director of DEI. 3. Lead the development and implementation of a strategic plan, with evaluation metrics, for equity work across the School. 4. Develop initiatives to support, guide, and enhance the experience of underrepresented and/or structurally marginalized students at YSN. 5. Provide consultation to the Director of Enrollment to facilitate equitable recruitment and retention of a diverse student body, including review of financial aid policies to support this goal. 6. Advise and collaborate with faculty and staff regarding student issues and concerns on equity; serve as advisor and resource for faculty, staff and students via facilitation, education and coaching. 7. Work with faculty to evaluate the learning environment and incorporate effective teaching/ learning strategies focusing on those which will serve to optimize successful student development of a cultural skills supporting equity in curriculum/classroom and clinical site recommendations. Â 8. Provide ongoing content assessment related to equity across the curriculum with resulting recommendations.Â 9. Recommend and co-sponsor educational experiences that foster faculty and learner education in health equity, implicit bias, anti-racism, and multi-cultural instruction. 10. Contribute to academic programs through teaching in their area(s) of expertise. 11. Assess both school and university culture impacting various stakeholders in order to move the schoolâ€™s equity agenda forward. 12. Engage in partnership with internal and external leaders to identify external grant support and fundraising strategies to support and advance equity initiatives. 13. Work with colleagues in Human Resources, Student Life, Admissions and across campus to ensure equity is embedded in all educational programs/initiatives for YSN faculty, staff, and students. 14. Represent YSN as a thought leader on equity work on relevant committees at YSN, across Yale, and others as prioritized., as well as at conferences and other public events. 15. Work closely with faculty, staff, administrators, and search committees, providing effective strategies for identifying diverse candidates and addressing bias in screening and selection processes; oversee unconscious bias training for all search, selection and admission committees. 16. Maximize data gathering, analysis, and knowledge of regulatory compliance relevant to diversity. Monitors and evaluate programmatic effectiveness through quantitative, qualitative and other methods and implements changes required for improvement. 17. Develop a comprehensive mentoring program to support the retention of faculty, staff and students from diverse backgrounds. 18. In collaboration with the Director of the ODEI, responds to bias incidents on behalf of YSN. 19. Supervision of administrative staffing and budgeting related to ODEI.
1. Knowledge of contemporary issues of inclusion, anti-racism, anti-oppression, social justice, diversity, access, and equity, including the current scholarship and pedagogical approaches that inform and address these issues. 2. Actively demonstrate strong communication skills that preserve confidentiality and foster open and inclusive communication among all YSN stakeholder groups and varying levels of these groups. 3. Effectively builds partnerships and influences stakeholders and decision-making at all levels of a complex, academic institution, and can pivot to deal with the nuances of audiences and constituent groups. 4. Demonstrate strong strategic planning and administrative skills to execute plans; demonstrated ability to set priorities, analyze data and think systematically from both a detailed and a strategic perspective. 5. Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills. 6. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills. 7. Experience with problem solving and conflict resolution, including restorative justice approaches; ability to build consensus and trust. 8. Operates with a sense of urgency, with regular communication and measurable progress against objectives.
