Middle School Humanities Teacher

Barrie School seeks candidates for the position of Middle School Humanities Teacher (grades 6-12) with employment beginning on August 20, 2021.

Joining Barrie during an exciting time, the Humanities Teacher should have experience as a progressive educator who believes in project-based learning as a methodology to empower students to learn important twenty-first century skills such as collaboration, teamwork, and critical thinking. We are specifically looking for someone to teach middle school humanities and/or possibly a ninth grade course. Humanities courses at Barrie are interdisciplinary and incorporate English language arts, literature, history, religion, economics, and philosophy, among other disciplines. This full-time, ten-month position will report to the Head of Barrie Middle & Upper School.

The position has the following qualifications:

• Comfort or experience with a decolonized and critical approach to history and/or literature.
• Demonstration of cross-cultural competence, empathy, and anti-racist pedagogies.
• Passion for both middle and upper school humanities.
• Experience supporting an intentionally diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.
• Knowledge of project-based learning (PBL) as a teaching methodology.
• Experience with differentiation, providing supports for students across the academic spectrum.
• Two to three years teaching experience preferred but not required.
• Excellent communication skills, detail-oriented, and ability to connect with diverse and wide-ranging constituencies, including but not limited to, students, parents, and faculty.
• Flexibility, a creative spirit, a desire to collaborate, a sense of humor, and a commitment to building rapport with colleagues are essential.
