Position Begins: August 2021 Status: Full-time, Exempt Department: Instructional Faculty, Upper School
Job Description: Beginning in August 2021, this exciting opportunity will go to a person who has a record of collaboration with adults and students on innovation, design, and making across a broad spectrum of interest, experience, and curricular content areas; a person who is motivated to delve into conversations and collaborate with faculty on integrating design and innovation across the curriculum, yet who can also instruct adults and students on the safe use of equipment while managing the day-to-day details of a vibrant and active design space. The successful applicant will be an inspiring innovator who is excited by the opportunity to work with high school students at an independent school with a deep commitment to the liberal arts.
St. Paul Academy and Summit School recently completed construction on the $25 million Hugh K. Schilling Math and Science Center, which provides distinctive, state-of-the-art facilities for math, science, computer science, robotics, and engineering. The facility includes two Engineering and Design Labs, which serve as spaces for fabrication and innovation; these spaces support current classes, and they provide opportunities for collaboration across disciplines as well as new curricular offerings in design and engineering. The Design Labs include 3d printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, a large format printer, soldering stations, sewing machines, hand tools, and a fully equipped wood shop including a CNC.
The Design and Innovation Specialist will supervise these labs and provide basic maintenance and instruction on the equipment. She/he will work with students both as a teacher and in support of their work on projects for other classes, and will collaborate with teachers in all academic disciplines, providing professional support and training as they integrate design and innovation into their curriculum. She or he should have a passion for collaboration, creative problem-solving and for working with students, and should be a motivated and engaged proponent of exploring design elements across the curriculum. The Design and Innovation specialist will also teach one class per semester in our robotics program and will lead an advisory of approximately 8 students. Coaching the robotics team (with an additional paid stipend) would also be part of the role.
Required: Candidates should possess at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, design, or a related field; experience working with high school students is preferred but not a prerequisite. An ideal candidate will have familiarity with many of the types of equipment in the Design Labs and understand both how to operate the machines and how to harness the creative power of these spaces for making. Preference will also be given to candidates with experience in electronics, wiring, and robotics. This is a full-time, ongoing position within the computer science and engineering department. Candidates should support the mission of SPA and the vision of the Upper School.
How to Apply: The position includes a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, resume, statement of teaching philosophy, and a list of references. To apply, please visit our website at www.spa.edu/employment.
