 During the eight-week Summer Component of Upward Bound, the Advisor Mentor will assist in advising students, provide direct tutoring services to students, assist in Zoom classrooms to keep students safe, supervise students when appropriate, maintain communication between students & summer instructors, coordinate and participate in recreational Zoom, organize and assist in workshops for students, uphold UB Summer Program rules and HNU campus policies, and help students with college and career information.
Essential Functions of Positions:
Advisor Mentors are responsible for assisting in monitoring the students' academic, social, and work experience during the Summer Component of the Upward Bound project. In addition to the aforementioned duties, Advisor Mentors will attend orientation sessions (training dates 6/7/21 to 6/11/21), organize weekly student check-in meetings, meet with supervisor & advising team to discuss students' written progress reports and student evaluations, attend staff and general meetings, assist in organizing and developing social and cultural awareness workshops for students, and participate in student conferences and field trips.
Uphold Summer Program rules and campus policies. Assist program staff and instructors with the implementation of the curriculum. Take action in emergency situations. Supervise student activities. Coordinate team projects with program participants. Coordinate social activities & study sessions. Provide tutoring and mentoring services to program participants. Collaborate with the teachers to implement the program curriculum. Must be able to commute to the HNU campus if necessary.
Qualifications and Experience:
At least one year of college or sophomore status. At least one year of career and academic advising experience. Preference will be given to candidates who share a life experience similar to those of Upward Bound students or who have experience in working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The ability to work closely with students, prior knowledge of Upward Bound or other student-centered projects, and previous tutoring experience.
