The service-learning coordinator directs all aspects of the High School service-learning program for students in grades 9-12, collaborates with the Middle School service learning teacher to develop All School programming, and works with the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the High School Administrators on the school’s approach to service-learning. Lab approaches service-learning (including pre-and post-service components) through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. These aspects include collaborating with the Director of DEI, High School Administration and faculty to carry out their vision for the program, preparing advisors for the program, developing and maintaining relationships with agencies that provide service-learning opportunities, managing all logistical aspects of each project, planning pre-and post-service reflection discussions for students, training students to lead reflection discussions, and maintaining accurate and confidential student records.
Create community engagement opportunities for students in grades 9-12.
Direct the 10th grade Year of Service program (service requirement for all 10th-grade students).
Develop and maintain partnerships with community organizations.
Oversee the Civic Engagement Program.
Coordinate with the HS Dean of Students to plan the 10th-grade service retreat.
Work with teachers to integrate service-learning into course curricula.
Organize annual MLK Day of Service with UChicago partners.
Serve as a High School advisor.
Oversee the DEI Student Leader Program.
Work closely with the Peer Leader Program.
Work closely with the high school advisory program for programming related to Service and Peer Leading.
Ensure all service-learning projects/programs are implemented in alignment with the vision/philosophy of the office of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Support the program design of the student-related DEI programming in the High School.
All teachers are expected to perform in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and are expected to work the required 179 days or days as stipulated in that agreement.
Anticipated start date for this position is 9/1/2020.
Education, Experience, or Certifications:
Bachelor's degree required.
A minimum of three years of experience working with high school youth.
Previous experience in developing and creating service-learning initiatives.
Proficient working with a wide range of students with diverse backgrounds, such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, learning abilities, class, language, and nationality, preferred.
Skillful working with community partners.
Working knowledge supporting project-based learning linked to service.
Adept in supporting student initiatives related to service.
