The Dean of Students will assist in fostering a positive, structured, consistent, caring and disciplined culture. The successful candidate will be a passionate educator who is committed to the West Nottingham Academy mission and core values. The Dean of Students is a senior member of the leadership team and will report directly to the Associate Head of School. The Dean of Students is a 12-month position.
Make mission aligned decisions that reinforce West Nottingham Academy values and culture within the community
Build strong relationships with students and collaborate with faculty to cultivate a safe, healthy and respectful environment
Supervise the safety, wellness, and discipline of the student body?
Support faculty in progressive and mission driven classroom management, formation of students and discipline?
Undertake all behavioral meetings for students which may include involvement of parents and faculty
Serve as the point person for dealing with behavioral crisis-intervention and acute behavioral issues
Promotes a culture to ensure that all students have excellent attendance and arrive at school on time
Assist with student orientations
Assist in student meetings for the purpose of building school community and mission driven leadership among students
Supervise student council and develop leadership programs for students with a lens of inclusivity
Ensure chaperone supervision for all student events
Oversee the review, editing and publication of the Student Handbook with special attention to policies that may contribute to inequity in our school community
Attend administrative meetings?
Assume all duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School
Coach or Assist 1 season of afterschool activity
Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree Preferred
3-5 years of experience as a dean of students or in a position of a similar nature
Required Skills and Experiences:
Approachability and the ability to connect well with adolescents??
Strong skills in supporting and promoting accountability in students
Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal skills, including a sense of humor
Experience with diverse student populations
Ability to communicate well with parents and families in both positive and difficult situations
Demonstrated experience implementing principles of diversity and inclusion into student life and leadership
Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form
Ability to be available for evening events, weekend supervision and school trips

Established in 1744, West Nottingham Academy is the oldest boarding school in the United States. We are a 9-12 grade coeducational boarding and day school located in Maryland near the picturesque Chesapeake Bay, an hour’s drive from either Philadelphia or Baltimore. Our mission is to prepare students for the challenges of college and life through a curriculum grounded in the liberal arts and sciences, and a commitment to the intellectual, spiritual and social growth of each student. Last year, 85 students were enrolled, including 25% from overseas.
