The Research Scientist will be a member of the project team at the Center for International Reproductive Health Training unit within the University of Michigan Medical School (CIRHT-UM). CIRHT-UM aims to build and strengthen research capacity in family planning (FP), comprehensive abortion care (CAC), and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) by partnering with academic and research institutions in Africa, providing training, mentorship, resources, and seed-grant funding through a competitive proposal submission process. The Research Scientist is an integral member of the team responsible for overseeing, guiding, and providing insight on a wide range of research related projects, including all CIRHT-UM funded seed grants. The Research Scientist will work closely with the center’s Director of Research and will be accountable for high-quality interactions with internal and external partners. This position is 100% grant funded.
Create and serve on grant review panel
Organize grant review panel members and channels of communication
Establish proposal submission method
Review incoming proposals for selection of CIRHT-UM seed grant funding
Review progress of projects selected for CIRHT-UM seed grant funding and see projects through to completion
Serve as an active liaison, partner, and advisor to CIRHT-UM Principal Investigators
Liaise with in-country Research Coordinator to determine specific research needs
Conduct research gap analyses at each partner institution in each expansion country
Planning and coordination
Organize, coordinate, and lead various training/workshops for faculty and trainees at partner institutions
Lead and assist with the organization and hosting of aspects associated with CIRHT-UM's scientific conference held every 2 years
Review applicants and select recipients of conference travel awards
Additional projects as identified by the PI and Co-PI
MPH, MSc, MS
5-6 years of direct project management and/or planning experience with extensive knowledge of the research life cycle
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to make decisions independently while keeping management and key stakeholders informed
Demonstrable organizational skills
Must be willing and able to travel
Personal experience with publications and the peer-review process
Knowledge to guide researchers in literature review and
Experience with statistical software
Experience serving as the Principal Investigator or lead of a research project
First-hand experience working in a research setting specifically focused on family planning (FP), comprehensive abortion care (CAC), and/or sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)
Previous experience working in Global Health
