French Teacher – Middle and Upper School & Department Chair Position

Position Title:  Department Chair and MS/US French Teacher

Reports to:  Directors of Teaching and Learning

Receives guidance from:  Directors of Teaching and Learning and Assistant Head of School (Educational Leadership Team), Division Directors

Collaborates closely with:   Department Heads, Department members

Supports:   Global Language department members  

Division/Department: Middle and Upper School

Location:  Palos Verdes, CA

Level/Grade: Middle/Upper

Type of position/FLSA:  Full-time Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

Department chair and language teacher with previous experience teaching French and deep understanding of and interest in student-centered and experiential instructional practices and backward design curriculum planning.

Department members work closely to create a coherent learning experience that has been designed to prepare students for lifelong learning as global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge, and the ability to lead. Each teacher also serves as a faculty advisor to students and participates in the life of the school outside of the classroom, and engages in professional development and learning.

ASSOCIATED RESPONSIBILITIES

TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES

• Teach 3 sections.
• Create a classroom environment of mutual respect and rapport; incorporate anti-bias and anti-racist practices into the classroom culture.
• Apply principles of backward design (UbD) to course and unit curriculum.
• Collaborate to plan curriculum around shared learning outcomes, skill sequences, content knowledge, and enduring understandings and essential questions.
• Use a variety of instructional techniques to engage students in active, experiential learning.
• Integrate technology into lessons, including the use of laptops and Google platforms.
• Use Chadwick principles of assessment and grading to assess, record, and provide feedback on student learning and next steps.
• Submit grades, checklists, and student comments as instructed and on time.
• Keep information systems up to date, including class calendars, gradebooks, and course online sites.

DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support teachers’ evaluation and development.
• Oversee course coherence and consistency.
• Lead conversations within and beyond the department.
• Manage departmental coherence and overall scope and sequence through effective communication.
• Find, deploy, and support department members.
• Empower Team Members to Lead.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

• Oversee an advisory group of students.
• Demonstrate an ability to proactively reflect on and participate in discussions around identity, race, and issues of social justice.
• Attend all relevant department and faculty meetings and school events, including new faculty training, professional development, and student orientations before school starts, back-to-school night, parent-teacher conferences, assemblies, graduation, etc.).
• Engage in new faculty orientations and training throughout the year.
• Cover classes for absent colleagues as requested.
• Supervise students as assigned, such as chaperoning, lunchtime supervision, and study hall.
• Read and follow employment policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
• Read and follow academic policies outlined in the relevant division Handbook.
• Communicate promptly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
• Be on campus from 7:45 am until 3:45 pm on days when school is in session.
• Other duties as assigned.
