Located on a beautiful, 45-acre hilltop campus on the scenic Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, Chadwick enrolls over 800 students drawn from more than 45 Southern California communities. Founded in 1935 by visionary educator Margaret Lee Chadwick, Chadwick is one of two schools operated by the Roessler-Chadwick Foundation. In 2010, Chadwick International (CI) was formed in Songdo, South Korea, which expanded opportunities for students around the globe to benefit from a world-class Chadwick education.

The Upper School Counselor is a full-time member of the Upper School faculty, reporting to the Director of Student Support and working closely with division directors, deans, grade-level teachers, and counseling teams. The Upper School Counselor provides support and instruction for students in grades nine through grade twelve, and consults with teachers, parents, and outside providers. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in an innovative, inclusive, and diverse program.

POSITION SUMMARY

? Provide individual counseling and support to students (grades 9-12) and families as needed.

? Participate in programs for parents and school communities including periodic Counselor Counselors in weekly newsletters and/or parent coffees.

? Support students, families, and additional parties during crisis situations for Upper School students, and K-12 students as needed.

? Design and lead wellness programs and courses (Wick Skills), including additional teaching duties as assigned.

? Consult and work with counselors and colleagues in the Village and Middle School programs as needed for student support or transitions.

? Meet with the US faculty and administrators on a weekly basis and follow up with students and parents as needed.

? Work with outside therapists, medical doctors, educational therapists, and other treatment providers to provide emotional, social, and educational support to Upper School students and their families as needed.

? Participate meaningfully in Center for Community Wellness and schoolwide faculty meetings.

? Engage substantively in the life of the school outside the classroom

? Lead and participate in professional development/professional learning communities, collaborate with colleagues, and assume other duties as assigned.

ASSOCIATED RESPONSIBILITIES

Keep necessary documentation and engage in ethical and legal practices and decision making.

Communicate promptly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.

Keep information systems up to date, including class calendars, grading software, and class websites.

Be on campus from 7:45 am until 3:45 pm on days when school is in session.

Attend all relevant faculty and school events (August Week, back-to-school night, parent-teacher conferences, parent education events, assemblies, graduation, etc.).

Cover classes or duties for absent colleagues as requested.

Supervise students as assigned, such as chaperoning, lunchtime supervision, student trips, and study hall.

REQUIRED AND PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCES, AND SKILLS

A graduate degree in counseling or related field required.

Licensed counselor or credentialed school counselor.

2-5 years’ experience as a school counselor preferred

Experience with assessment and stabilization of crisis situations.

Excellent communication skills and record keeping skills.

Strong counseling and teaching experience with diverse age levels and abilities is preferred.

Strong knowledge of pedagogy and educational tools, including relevant technology, is preferred.

Preferred Lanterman Petris Short certification.

Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
