DEPARTMENT: UPPER SCHOOL FACULTY REPORTS TO: HEAD OF UPPER SCHOOL STATUS: FULL-TIME, EXEMPT
Black Pine Circle School is a K-8 independent school in Berkeley, California. For close to 50 years, we have created lifelong learners through an inquiry-based Socratic education that places equal emphasis on academics and the arts. Our Lower School (grades K-5) supports approximately 130 students, and our Upper School (grades 6-8) supports approximately 200 students.
Position Description: The upper school math teacher is responsible for three periods of instruction each day, as well as being an advisor to an advisory group. This position will collaborate with members of the math department to refine curriculum, evaluate students, and monitor the efficacy of the program. Areas of emphasis will include coordination of grade-level math curriculum scope and sequence, thorough assessment with clear feedback loop, collaborative work with other faculty and all members of the upper school team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Direct instruction in the form of class time with students • Advisor to one advisory group • Curricular design (course scope and sequence) • Report Card and Progress Report writing for approximately 60 students • Assisting with student behavioral issues • Working with BPC’s upper school faculty • Parent communication in various forms
Qualifications and Requirements: • BA/BS required • An advanced degree or credential in a relevant field of study preferred • A minimum of four years of experience in education • A passion for mathematics • Demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction • Experience with multicultural education • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff • Excellent teaching, writing, and communication skills
