Assistant Dean for Clinical Curriculum 0.4 â 0.6 FTE Assistant Dean for Clinical Curriculum The Assistant Dean for Clinical Curriculum provides administrative oversight of the core clinical clerkships and the selective/elective clerkships and courses in the post-core clerkship phase of the curriculum. The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Associate Dean for Curriculum on all curricular matters and is responsible for the day-to-day oversight and operations of clerkships and courses ensuring that all curricular activities at all sites are aligned with Keck policies and procedures and in compliance with LCME requirements. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Curriculum works with the Associate Dean for Curriculum to evaluate, revise and develop the core, selective and elective clinical curriculum, to maintain established clinical training sites and to establish new clinical training sites as appropriate. Administrative Responsibilities - Chair the Clerkship Director/Medical Student Educator meeting (monthly)
- Chair the Selective/Elective Subcommittee of the Years III-IV Curriculum Committee (~ quarterly and ad hoc)
- Years III-IV Curriculum Committee, ex-officio member (monthly)
- Medical Education Curriculum Committee (MECC), ex-officio member (monthly)
Specific Educational Oversight Responsibilities (includes, but is not limited to, the following) Orientation to Core Clerkship Phase - Oversee, develop and coordinate the Transition to Clinical Practice course and Procedural and Documentation/Presentation Skills Curriculum, including recruitment of faculty
- Review and appropriately modify courses based on student evaluations of previous year
Core Clinical Clerkships: The Assistant Dean for Clinical Curriculum works with the Clerkship Directors with regard to the following: Clerkship Sites - Maintain, develop and establish clinical sites as needed for required clerkships
- Ongoing review (with site visits) of clinical sites for quality, comparability and consistency of educational experiences
- Assure that voluntary faculty appointments are up to date and accurate
- Administrative interface with affiliated sites: site requirements for students at all facilities, preceptor welcome letter, thank you letters/certificates to faculty at end of year
- Assist with the acquisition and maintenance of student housing at distant sites
Clerkships - Advise clerkships on curriculum content and structure, including discipline-specific content and assure KSOM expectations are achieved
- Collaborate with the Clinical Skills Education and Evaluation Center and Clerkship Directors and Medical Student Educators to ensure that KSOM expectations are achieved with regard to clinical and procedural skills development within and across clerkships
- Ensure compliance with LCME standards in clinical education
- Review and act upon clerkship evaluations twice yearly, and as needed
- Provide ongoing support and troubleshooting for Clerkship Directors and Medical Student Educators re: clerkship education and administration
- Review clerkship schedulesâon call, study time, days off, working hours, advanced notification of sites
- Oversee comprehensive annual reviews of all core clerkships including goals/objectives, mapping to KSOM objectives, tracking of performance metrics, and action items
- Assure consistency and accuracy of clerkship manuals
- Facilitate the timely submission of grades (not later than 4 weeks after end of clerkship)
     Intersessions Courses I and II During Core Clerkship Phase - Oversee, develop and coordinate the Intersessions I and II curriculum
Selectives and Electives - Provide oversight/quality assurance of selectives and electives
- Identify new selective and elective options that can meet student and KSOM objectives and facilitate their development as appropriate
- Provide assistance to faculty in development of new selectives and electives
- Work with affiliated sites on development/implementation of electives
