The Miquon School is seeking a part-time (50-80%) school psychologist/counselor/social worker beginning in the 2018-19 school year. This open position presents an opportunity to any psychologist, social worker, or counselor who has a master’s degree and at least 3-5 years of experience working with children and families, ideally in an elementary school setting.
The Role: The school psychologist/counselor works with students, staff, parents and other professionals to create a safe, healthy, and supportive learning environment that strengthens connections among home, school, and community.
Observe and counsel children to understand their strengths and challenges and recommend appropriate interventions/resources to teachers as well as parents;
Offer expert consultation, direction, and support to staff and families regarding children’s social-emotional growth, physical and emotional well-being, and academic strengths and differences;
Serve as a resource and consultant on mental health and child/adolescent development and psychology;
Provide referrals to outside services and collaborate with school staff, parents, and outside professionals/agencies in planning to meet the needs of individual students;
Interpret evaluations or reports from outside providers; advise and assist on the implementation of recommendations for students with learning differences and/or social or emotional support needs;
Provide direct short-term counseling for students, and parent consultation as needed;
Regularly visit classrooms and Choice time to observe students at the request of staff or parents, work with peer relations and classroom dynamics, and conduct classroom meetings when appropriate;
Guide the development of social/emotional and wellness curricula for Nursery-Grade 6; and
Meet regularly with the Principal and serve as an integral member of the Child Guidance Team.

Founded in 1932 in a tradition of Progressive education that is strongly upheld today, Miquon is an independent, coeducational elementary school just outside Philadelphia for children in Nursery through the 6th grade. The School enrolls approximately 150 students in eight mixed-age groups, typically 16-22 children in size. The person we are seeking will have a master’s degree or higher in school counseling, psychology, or social work. Candidates will have at least 3-5 years experience working with children and families, ideally in an elementary school setting. The person we are seeking will also have:

Familiarity with assessment and screening tools for elementary school students and experience interpreting educational and psychological testing results from outside providers;
The skills to communicate and advocate effectively, both in person and in writing, with teachers and families;
A commitment to social justice in the elementary school setting, and fostering an inclusive, equitable, and diverse learning community;
An appreciation for the value of Progressive education.
