Fryeburg Academy, a 575-student day and boarding high school in Western Maine and the Mount Washington Valley, seeks an outstanding beginning or early-career outdoor educator with diverse guiding or trip leading experiences as well as a degree related to wilderness guiding, outdoor education, or outdoor recreation. The successful candidate will assume duties on August 23, 2021, at which point a current WFR (or WEMT) certification is required. The AE intern’s primary responsibility will be the design and implementation of an extracurricular outdoor adventure and leadership program for Fryeburg Academy students in grades 9-12. The AE intern will work closely with the Environmental Education intern and the Director of the Outdoor Learning and Research Center to implement the program, which will include up to twelve weekend trips as well as a seven-day backpacking trip in the spring. The AE intern will also be responsible for challenge course facilitation (training provided) and equipment management. The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm for working with students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, and with a range of interests and skills.
FA faculty and interns also have responsibilities connected with the school's boarding program and extracurricular offerings. Pre-career experience working with adolescents-- e.g., as a tutor, coach, camp counselor-- is a plus.
