Assistant/Associate Director of College Counseling

For the past twenty-five years, Shalhevet has promoted the values of our Jewish heritage, the ideals of American democracy and a passionate support for the welfare of the State of Israel, within an environment that encourages critical and creative thought. Our current student body is approximately 260 students who are leaders, artists, athletes, scholars and most importantly mensches. We are seeking an Assistant/Associate Director of College Counseling who will guide students and families with a comprehensive college search process that includes: helping families research colleges and plan visiting trips, navigating the financial aid process (if applicable), understanding standardized testing requirements, and helping each student prepare an authentic and accurate college application. As an ambassador of the school, the Assistant/Associate Director of College Counseling has extensive contact with college admissions officers, helping them to understand and appreciate the students of Shalhevet and the unique attributes of our Just Community. The Assistant/Associate Director hosts university representatives at Shalhevet in addition to visiting college and university campuses each year. 

Essential Responsibilities:

• know and advocate strongly for Shalhevet students, its curriculum, and mission; 
• work collaboratively with educational leaders to set academic policy; 
• work with approximately 30- 35 counselees each year and guide them through the academic planning, college search, financial aid, and application process; 
• work with students, families, and Judaic Studies faculty to identify colleges that are the right fit for the Jewish needs of our students on campus; 
• assist students to navigate the process of deferring admission to university for gap year programs; 
• actively cultivate and maintain strong relationships with college admissions officers; 
• assist students to match academic goals with coursework; 
• assist counselees with essays and preparation for interviews; 
• revise the Shalhevet School profile annually; 
• coordinate PSAT, Mock ACT administrations, and AP exams; 
• prepare for and host annual Case Studies program; 
• compose 30-35 counselor letters of recommendation; 
• stay current with college admission trends; 
• pursue on-going professional development by attending conferences and tours; 

Qualification: 

• 3-5 years of experience in college counseling and/or selective college admissions; 
• An empathetic and innovative leader who thinks strategically about ways to improve the college counseling program; 
• Exceptional public speaking, written communication, and listening skills; 
• Be a proven collaborator who can work with all internal and external members of the community; 
• Growth mindset with interests in self-development and cultivating leadership;
