ESLA is seeking a Middle School Science Teacher with an unshakable commitment to student success, whose classroom is filled with surprise and delight. 

The ideal candidate...

• Has an abiding passion and deep knowledge of working with a diverse student body
• Has experience designing innovative curricula in their discipline 
• Leverages technology to enhance student achievements 
• Has expertise in differentiating instruction for a heterogeneous student body
• Demonstrates success in the classroom with different adolescent needs across grades 6–8

• Is an expert who combines engaging, hands-on, inquiry-based lessons into a “storyline framework” to create units of study with high levels of challenge 
• Scaffolds the learning experience to provide guidance and support for all students to reach their highest potential
• Guides students in establishing a strong foundation in asking scientific questions that are then supported by evidence-based conclusions 
• Can connect scientific events, developments, and ideas to events in our city, nation, and world

About the Department:

ESLA’s Science Department contributes to the school’s greater mission by fostering metacognition, self-understanding, critical thinking, and interpretive sophistication in its students. Upon graduating from ESLA, the science student will possess:

• The ability to apply scientific thinking, strategies, and skills to unknowns in their world;
• Critical analysis and evaluation skills that they can communicate in a variety of methods;
• A greater capacity for examining one’s assumptions and assessing the implications of one’s actions; and 
• The ability to educate oneself, complete self-directed projects, distinguish between the reasonable and unreasonable scientific claims of others and make informed judgments based on their own critical analysis.

Responsibilities:

• Teach at least 5 sections of Middle School science
• Prepare course materials—ideally moving away from “cookie cutter” curricular frameworks toward analysis of actual scientific material and texts
• Utilize a variety of assessments that relate to what students are learning in class, but can be applied outside of the school 
• Teach, encourage and support academic skills such as critical reading, writing and thinking, organization, analysis and evaluation 
• Act as an Advisor to a small group of Middle or Upper School students
• Willingness to participate in at least one aspect of the school’s extracurricular life for at least one semester (sports, club, performing arts, teaching a Middle School elective, etc.)
