DESCRIPTIONThe Marine Physical Laboratory division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking a Principal Marine Mechanician. Under direction of the MPL Shop Superintendent, the incumbent shall plan and organize the shop facility daily operations including providing direction and training of other Marine Mechanicians in support of oceanographic projects. Additional duties include: Perform all duties and exercises independent judgement as needed. Assists with planning and scheduling work; provides recommendations on maintaining cost controls and act as a consultant and provides work direction to marine personnel. Perform the most senior level skills as machinist. Work from blueprints, rough sketches, written and oral instructions. Have basic welding and fabrication skills. Operate heavy equipment including mobile cranes, forklifts and wire spooling winches. Must be familiar with the principle and operation of hydraulics, associated mechanical and electrical controls. Operate computer controlled shop machinery, Proto Trak lathes and mills. Program using Master Cam or equivalent.QUALIFICATIONSHave a basic knowledge of marine construction, and general familiarity with accepted maritime practices in workmanship and safety in order to comply with the certification requirements of the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), and the ASME Code. Skill to utilize available resources efficiently including elctronic and mechanical test equipment, technical literature, heavy machinery, machine tools, hand tools, and transportation equipment. At-sea experience including the preparation, deployment, and recovery of deep sea oceanographic moorings. Sea-going skills involving rigging, deck safety, deck layout, stowing and securing gear, crane, A-frame and winch operations, ship handling. Demonstrated knowledge and experience of all machine shop equipment, including lathes, mills, grinding, cutting, horizontal boring, presses, brakes, rollers, shears, welding and CNC operations both turning and milling. Proto Trak mills and lathes. Demonstrated understanding of mechanical design, including structural, materials, corrosion, power transmission and hydraulics. Basic computer skills including computer aided design, word processing, Cad Cam drafting. Demonstrated experience in documentation of laboratory tests including corrosion, fatigue, design analysis, product reliability and production quality control and efficiency. Ability to organize, coordinate and delegate tasks to temporary personnel. Educational responsibilities directly associated with laboratory machine shop equipment focusing on selection of tools and materials, machine operations, and especially safety procedures. Other facets include ability to work on multiple projects, problem solving and communicative skills. High school graduate, have 6 years experience in machine shop work, wood working, welding steel fabrication or mechanics, 2 years of which have been in marine construction or repair work.
