Léman Manhattan Preparatory School seeks an Upper School ELL Specialist for a Maternity Leave replacement (May 3rd – June 11th). This position will cover the remainder of the 2020-21 SY.
The ELL Specialist teaches leveled pull-out ESOL classes for beginner, low intermediate, intermediate or high intermediate English language learners. The ELL Specialist focuses on building the students’ listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills needed for success in the mainstream classroom. The ELL Specialist will also co-teach with the mainstream content teacher in one or more of the Humanities classes, where low intermediate and/or intermediate ELLs are clustered. The ELL Specialist also works collaboratively with mainstream teachers at large to best meet the needs of the English language learners, which could include push-in support.
Sheltered practices are utilized whenever possible under the umbrella of the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP). The role of the ELL specialist may often be that of a coach with regards to strategies that will best benefit ELLs.
To create and teach a robust curriculum focused on reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the leveled pull-out ESOL classes.
To co-teach and co-plan assigned classes with Humanities teachers.
To create scaffolded and/or differentiated materials for the Humanities classes.
To collaborate with other ELL Specialists in the ESOL Department to maintain continuity of curriculum across the leveled classes.
To communicate and collaborate with other ELL Specialists and classroom teachers to ensure the needs of ELLs are being met in the classroom.
To communicate and collaborate with Residential Counselors in Residential Life to ensure ELLs are being supported.
To assist in the testing of incoming ELL students for placement in the program and during the year for progress monitoring.
Bachelor’s Degree required, Master's in TESOL or equivalent preferred
Prior ESOL teaching experience in an upper school setting is preferred (SIOP teaching strategies)
Ability to collaborate with others.
Understanding of cultural differences and the impact of culture on learning.
