About the Upper School:
The Upper School is home to students in Grades 9-12 and is characterized by advanced inquiry, lively discussion, deep engagement with topics, a strong sense of community, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Students develop the habits and relationships that will carry them through high school and into the world of college and beyond. The Upper School's rigorous academic curriculum and seminar-based learning model is complemented by a network of support that includes teachers, advisors, college counselors, and resources for both academic and social/emotional well-being.
The position of Upper School Physical Education and Wellness teacher is an on-going, full-time appointment that involves delivering quality physical education and health/wellness education to 9th-grade students. Additionally, the candidate hired for this position would be required to coach at least one season of a SPA sport -- with an additional stipend. The ideal candidate would be open to coaching multiple seasons/sports.
Our physical education classes are centered around a holistic approach to health topics and activities designed to promote the students’ physical and emotional health and well-being. Students explore various topics that promote a healthy sense of self and a positive approach to fitness, nutrition, and healthy habits. The 9th grade course addresses the construction and implementation of goal setting as it relates to overall well-being. Content may include nutrition, mindfulness, and healthy decision-making.
The ideal candidate will strive to better understand the emotional needs of their students and support a program where self-reflection, empathy, and flexibility are emphasized. Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration and communication with both colleagues and students, is required. Candidates should support the mission of SPA, the vision of the Upper School, and be eager to join a professional community where openness to growth is the norm. Additional certifications such as (but not limited to) CPR/AED training, yoga, outdoor education, personal training are encouraged.
Candidates should possess a bachelor's degree in physical education, health education, psychology or a related field, and should have experience working with high school students as a teacher. Candidates should also have knowledge of the social-emotional needs of younger high school students so that they can help students grow during the transition from middle school into high school.
