Director of Student Engagement

SUMMARY:

The Director of Student Engagement serves as an active member of the Division of Student Life team by promoting community development and programming through the Office of Student Engagement.  The mission of the Office of Student Engagement is to build a campus community in which all students and student organizations are encouraged and supported in the cultivation of our Student Development Model encompassing Creativity, Intellect, Leadership, Citizenship, and Identity. Within the Office of Student Engagement, all students will find a place where their voices are heard and they are empowered to become more competent, purposeful, and ethical members of the Siena Heights community.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Overall Office Management

1. Supervise a staff of work study students.
2. Deliver an effective on campus marketing mix (e.g. fliers, bulletin boards, word of mouth, emails) and social media engagement strategy.
3. Approve and distribute campus advertisements.
4. Cultivate and maintain a welcoming atmosphere conducive to building professional relationships between students, faculty, and staff.
5. Develop co-curricular assessment of the core areas in the University’s Student Development Model.

Student Organizations and Clubs

1. Organize student organization registration and maintain the SHU Student Organization Handbook.
2. Train executive board officers of student organizations on policies and procedures of the Office of Student Engagement; other training topics may include: budget management, recruitment, fundraising, program development.
3. Organize Student Leadership Summit each year to bring together representatives from each student organization and club for training and leadership development.
4. Coordinate Student Involvement Fairs each semester.
5. Recruit, train, and support faculty and staff advisors for student organizations and clubs.
6. Encourage student organizations to provide programming around cultural, educational, recreational, spiritual, service, or social value.
7. Ensure that student organizations are in compliance with University policies, including the Anti-Hazing Agreement and Tailgating policy.

Student Programming and Recreation Committee (SPARC)

1. Serve as the primary advisor of SPARC, which is a student organization charged with nearly half of the student activity fee to plan and implement campus-wide and late night programs, leadership and service initiatives.
2. Provide supervision in areas of student organization registration, recruitment, event planning and execution, budget management, and officer training.
3. Attend general assembly meetings, executive board meetings, and programs as appropriate.
4. Select and travel with a student delegation to the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) national and/or regional conferences.
5. Coordinate an annual retreat with executive board members.

Major Campus Events

1. Plan and implement an annual programming calendar, which includes Homecoming Week typically in October with initiatives geared towards our current student population, voter engagement in Novembers, and Halo Fest Week in April with campus spirit events and the student leadership awards for student organizations and student leaders.
2. Plan and implement an annual Sibs and Kids Weekend with support from the Office of Residence Life and a planning committee.
3. Design an Intramurals program that coordinates with Athletics to provide recreational sporting opportunities for all interested students.
4. Serve on the “Siena Serves” committee, an umbrella term used for local, regional, and national service opportunities with the Siena Heights community.

Orientation and Welcome Week

1. Serve as the lead organizer to engage first-year students through academic and social programming during Welcome Week, which is typically the week before fall semester classes.
2. Responsible for selecting, training, and supporting the Orientation Team Leaders. Also works closely with the Academic Advisor for First Year Experience (FYE) to support the (FYE) Peer Mentors.
3. Facilitate monthly trainings during winter semesters.
4. Coordinate O-Team volunteers during summer Siena Heights Orientation (SHO) days.
5. Develop and co-facilitate a multiday O-Team and Peer Mentor training prior to Welcome Week.

University Center Management

1. Oversee day to day operations of the University Center to ensure the highest quality experience for our students and guests.
2. Collaborate with facilities to ensure clean and safe environment.
3. Maintain paper supply and toner for public printing in the University Center Living Room.
4. Assist with group needs in University Center conference rooms.
5. Coordinate the maintenance of cardio equipment and exercise classes for students.
6. Assist Campus Event Management with booking events within building.
7. Ensure work order requests are submitted promptly and resolved in a timely manner.
