History Department Chair/Upper School History Teacher

Garrison Forest School has an opening for a full-time History Department Chair Chair/Upper School History Teacher to begin August 2021. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic educator who brings an energetic and innovative approach to the teaching of history. The ideal candidate would be able to teach a variety of history courses including an interdisciplinary project-based seminar class that meets outside of the academic day and to supervise the development and delivery of the department curriculum across all divisions of the school. 

Along with classroom teaching, contributing to the co-curricular life of the school is an integral part of the teacher's role in our community, as is a collaborative approach to planning and teaching. Ideal candidates will be interested in preparing our students to live and work in a global and multicultural society. A desire to contribute to the leadership and scholarship of young women are important qualities for this position, as well as an ability to build positive, constructive relationships with students. In particular, the Chair will play a lead role in refining and implementing a new global scholars program and in collaborating with colleagues on civic education initiatives. This position reports to the Head of the Upper School. 

The History Department Chair/Upper School History Teacher will…

• Serve as Chair of the department
• Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of curriculum and subject matter with a course-load that could include some combination  of Economics, History of Modern Africa, and World History
• Teach a seminar class that takes place outside of the school day one weeknight per week and several Saturdays throughout the school year
• Support new initiatives in global learning on campus
• Be prepared to teach and support students in the development of core academic skills, including research, writing, critical reading, and discussion
• Serve as an academic advisor to a group of students
• Contribute to the life of the School by chaperoning three-weekend activities per year for the Residential Life program and advising co-curricular activities.
• Work alongside the Upper School Administrative team to build a meaningful learning experience for students
• Create a secure and stimulating environment in which students grow in both autonomy and the ability to work and interact together.
• Take responsibility for being a role model by maintaining an environment that fosters respect among students and colleagues
• Possess strong communication skills, a patient and thorough understanding of adolescence and the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues.
