Founded in 1831, Grand River Academy is an all-boys, college preparatory, boarding school with a strong tradition of devoting the necessary resources to attract and retain the best mission-appropriate students and Faculty from throughout the world. Now in its second century, Grand River Academy is located in historic northeast Ohio, approximately 45 miles from Cleveland. Grand River Academy enrolls 75 students as both boarding and day students (75 percent boarding) in grades eight through twelve plus a post-graduate year. Our student body is composed of students from 14 U.S. states and 13 nations. Position: Dean of Students Reports To: Head of School Terms of Employment: - 12 month, A dministrative salaried position.
The Dean of Students will report to the Head of School and work with fellow administrators, Faculty, and staff to develop the programs, policies, and culture to support student wellness, growth, and achievement in line with the school’s mission. The Dean of Students oversees student conduct, school discipline, residential life, and student activities programming. Dean of Student Responsibilities: - Maintains student discipline and follow-through with correspondence record keeping relating to discipline.
- Keeps the head fully informed on student issues and all other relevant matters pertaining to school life.
- Provides an orderly, controlled environment in which learning can take place, a school climate which is supportive and which reflects high morale.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the head of school.
- Is aware of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of our school community and to develop plans for meeting these needs.
- Establishes guidelines for proper student conduct and dress; to maintain student discipline consonant with school policies; to monitor students’ adherence to established school rules; to maintain accurate records of student attendance and citizenship.
- Supports the school and its leadership.
- Responsible for the oversight of the student management system.
- Process all discipline slips and assess and assign appropriate discipline.
- Ensure that consequences are served by the students.
- Oversight of student class attendance and afternoon study hall attendance.
- Maintain accurate records of student discipline.
- Administer the drug testing component of the Drug and Alcohol Program in association with the school nurse..
Essential Duties: - Oversee the student experience and foster a school climate that enhances community and student growth
- Work with the residential life staff, Faculty, and administration to create a safe, structured, and nurturing environment for both academic and social development
- Develop and oversee an outdoor program in accordance with the mission of the school
- Manage student behavior and discipline
- Oversee student activities
- Supervise and train residential life staff
- Act as a student advisor
- Teach one class, as available
