Dean of Faculty

Founded in 1831, Grand River Academy is an all-boys, college preparatory, boarding school with a strong tradition of devoting the necessary resources to attract and retain the best mission-appropriate students and Faculty from throughout the world. Now in its second century, Grand River Academy is located in historic northeast Ohio, approximately 45 miles from Cleveland. Grand River Academy enrolls 75 students as both boarding and day students (75 percent boarding) in grades eight through twelve plus a post-graduate year. Our student body is composed of students from 14 U.S. states and 13 nations.

Position: Dean of Faculty

Reports To: Head of School

Terms of Employment:

• 12 month, Administrative salaried position.

The Dean of Faculty mentors and supports teachers; partners with the Academic Dean and Department Chairs to support innovative pedagogy and curriculum; fosters exemplary teaching consonant with Grand River Academy’s core values and mission statement; and manages the recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and professional development of the Faculty. This position reports to the Head of School, is a member of the administrative team, and works closely with other administrators in the overall leadership and management of the school.

Dean of Faculty Responsibilities:

• Maintains congruence between the school’s board-approved mission statement and all activities of that division.

• Observes, supervises, and helps evaluate the Faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum; supervises the teaching process, and helps to review & evaluate the academic programs.

• Leads the Academic Council in the articulation of the school mission, school goals, department goals, course objectives, materials, methods and means of assessment.

• Oversees and directs the activities of the department chairs.
• Makes recommendations to the Head of School regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of Faculty.
• Strives for unity, harmony, and cooperation amongst the Faculty.
• Oversees the coordination of the co-curricular and extracurricular programs of the school; keeps the entire school community informed of various school-wide programs and activities.

• Create a schedule of activities for the week and Friday dorm coverage.
• Ensure that all students are attending activities and events.

• Is a visible presence in all areas of the school; working toward a resolution of all problems - both routine and unique - as they arise; to keep the head of school informed of the general programs, activities, and problems of the school.

• To serve as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures.

• To assist in the admission process for the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of applicants for enrollment.

Additional Responsibilities:

• Serve as liaison to the Parents Association.
• Attend all Faculty meetings.
• Serve as a member of the Administrative Team.
• Serve on the Administrative Duty Team for campus and dormitory oversight.
• Teach sections as assigned by the school.
