DESCRIPTION

The laboratory's focus is the generation of cardiac phenotypes from human embryonic stem cells.

Under close supervision, perform standard laboratory procedures with human embryonic stem cells to investigate mesoderm and cardiomyocyte formation. Will perform routine differentiation and analysis of pluripotent stem cells and other experimental procedures. Will create new induced pluripotent stem cell lines from patient derived fibroblasts and participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on this research.

Additional duties include overseeing IPS colonies and maintaining a database of all fibroblast strains. Will also perform molecular biology techniques to generate in situ probes and transgenic constructs. Perform general lab duties including ordering reagents for stem cell work as well as laboratory maintenance, ordering laboratory supplies; serving as primary contact for vendors, physical plant office personnel, etc. Engage in training to learn new techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Theoretical knowledge as is typically acquired by a Bachelor's of Science Degree in an appropriated field of science or technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Demonstrated experience working with human embryonic stem cells.

• Proven experience with molecular biological techniques to include DNA (including cloning), RNA and protein preparation, quantification and analysis (southern, northern and western blotting and immunoprecipitation techniques).

• Demonstrated experience with cell culture techniques.

• Demonstrated experience with basic molecular biology laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, balances, pH meter, etc.

• Proficient knowledge and experience in data analysis using Microsoft tools.

• Proven ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Strong organizational skills to keep clear and accurate records.

• Strong ability to work collaboratively on a research project. Ability to maintain a high level of motivation to contribute to cutting edge research, and seek and learn new experimental methods as required.

• Demonstrated skill in the preparation of reagents and maintenance of laboratory stocks.

• Ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability in using tact, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility with diverse personalities and situation. Ability to work as part of a research team, and interact effectively with collaborating labs and others in scientific community.
