Germanna is currently seeking a qualified Counselor to work with our students in the Counseling Office at the Fredericksburg Area Campus. The primary purpose of this position is to support the retention and overall completion rate of our students. The role of the Counselor is to counsel and facilitate studentsâ™ ability to make effective academic decisions, develop academic plans and to set educational, career and personal development goals. The counselor will educate students about resources and services by making presentations and/or meeting individually with continuing students, intervene with individual and programmatic supports that encourage student persistence, and Assist with career assessment and transfer planning. In addition, the counselor will support retention through counseling students at risk of failing or dropping out by responding to early alert (Navigate, etc.) referrals from faculty and staff, counsel students about college and community resources which assist with basic life needs such as housing, food, healthcare, mental health supports, etc. The counselor will also assist with other personal and external barriers that can impede retention, progression, and completion of educational and career goals. The Counselor will conduct Single Stop intake support and facilitate student access to emergency funding sources, technology, and federal/state/local community resources such as SNAP, healthcare, housing support â“ as well as many others. The Counselor will make referrals to community resources for needs beyond the scope of the counseling role at the College. The Counselor will perform the duties of the position utilizing face to face and remote methods as appropriate. Duties and Responsibilities: •Provide interventions for at-risk and struggling students referred from faculty through early alert system (including Navigate) •Counsel students on academic and/or personal issues getting in the way of maintaining good academic standing (including probation student outreach and academic suspension recovery) •Assist students with identifying strategies to facilitate successful program completion •Focus specifically on at-risk students or populations who need intentional support •Assist students in distress or dealing with mental health issues to connect with appropriate resources in the community for stabilization and constructive resolution to presenting issues •Make referrals to community resources for needs beyond the scope of the counseling role at the College •Employ variety of assessments, online resources, and career software tools (such as VA Wizard) to assist students as appropriate •Conduct Single Stop intake assessment to identify resources for students in need •Connect students to federal/state/local community resources such as SNAP, healthcare, housing support, technology, and emergency funding sources •Advocate for students pursuing basic need resources internally and externally To apply for this position please submit online your completed VCCS application, letter of interest, resume/CV, and unofficial transcripts before March 17, 2021 to be considered in the first review of applications.
