Counselor I
County College of Morris
Serve as a key member of the Counseling and Student Success staff. Develop, conduct, and manage multiple student projects and programs including personal counseling, student advocacy, academic planning and career development. Assist the Coordinator of Counseling and Student Success with development and planning initiatives that focus on student success. Participate in the evaluation, review, and development of learning outcomes for all department programs and initiatives. Uses holistic wellness model to provide short-term personal counseling to students on issues that may interfere with academic performance. Stays current on prevalent topics such as anxiety and stress, LGBT concerns, depression, relationships, domestic violence, suicide, self-image, substance use, bullying, and anger management. Intervenes and responds to crisis situations. Provides culturally competent counseling while supporting underrepresented and underserved student populations. Conducts support groups and workshops that provide students with opportunities for self-exploratory growth. Assists students with educational planning, including re-entry into the academic environment, curriculum choice, and transfer information. Provides career counseling, career counseling programming, and administers various career assessment tools to students representing a broad range of career interests. Advises non-matriculate and readmitted students on course selection and program planning. Designs and coordinates educational events, guest speakers, interactive presentations, and programming, such as leading awareness and prevention months. Collaborates with members of the department to develop innovative student development strategies and programs for a variety of populations identified needing additional support, including, but not limited to, students of color, athletes, probation and dismissal students, underrepresented students, LGBT populations, and etc. Assists with the planning, coordination, and evaluation of outreach programs for specific populations including retention activities to support student success. Acts as a student advocate and makes appropriate referrals to on campus and off-campus community resources. Provides education to faculty and staff on prevalent topics in order to assist students on campus. Stays current on changes within the college and higher education at large. Contributes to the department’s strategic planning initiatives. Assists in the department’s outcomes and assessment data collection and reporting. Evaluates and review learning outcomes for workshops and programs of responsibility. Assists the Coordinator of C&SS with updating memorandum of agreements and mental health resources created and distributed by the office. Completes proper documentation and paperwork in a timely manner. Participates, and leads when appropriate, in college committees and on task forces to enhance the overall functioning of the college. Performs any other duties required by the Coordinator of C&SS.

Preferred Qualifications: Proficiency in Excel/Access and managing databases, diagnostic assessment, crisis intervention, bilingual (Spanish preferred), experience in working with a diverse and multicultural population including the LGBT community, adult students, and issues related to substance use. Excellent written and verbal skills, and computer proficiency including knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, Ellucian Colleague, and Titanium. Minimum of 1-3 years of counseling experience working in higher education; community college setting preferred or working with college student populations. A Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or closely related field. Professional or Associate License required.
