Job Description Summary Provide prenatal and preconception genetic counseling to a diverse population of high risk patients. Play a key role in educating learners in medical genetics and contributing to investigation and discovery in the area of prenatal and reproductive medical genetics.
We are seeking an exceptional individual to join the Department of Women’s Health as a Prenatal Genetic Counselor in the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center at Dell Children’s Hospital. This is a full-time clinical position that will report jointly to the Director of the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center and to the Director, Genetic Counseling Services.
The Comprehensive Fetal Care Center will be located in the newly built outpatient pavilion adjacent to Dell Children’s Medical Center. It will be staffed by two senior fetal medicine specialists and offer the entire spectrum of prenatal services for fetal anomalies including diagnostic genetic testing, comprehensive ultrasound, MRI, and fetal echocardiography. Fetal interventions including intrauterine transfusion, laser for complications of monochorionic twins, repair of fetal spina bifida and tracheal occlusion for fetal diaphragmatic hernia will be offered through the program at Dell Children’s Medical Center.
The Genetic Counselor will provide genetic counseling services to a diverse population of high-risk patients in the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center and provides cross coverage for the broader Maternal Fetal Medicine program. They will have the opportunity to participate in the education of learners and contribute to investigation and discovery.
Elicit and organize family history and medical information, including pregnancy development. Provide supportive counseling regarding decision-making, testing, procedures, and follow-up care.
Determine optimal prenatal genetic testing strategies. Create and maintain positive relationships with private and academic genetics laboratories to facilitate appropriate, timely, and accurate results.
Provide timely reporting of test results to patients and providers. Coordinate communication between patient and multi-disciplinary medical team in the diagnosis and evaluation of fetal conditions.
Document in multiple Electronic Health Record and databases systems in a thorough and timely manner.
Maintain positive relationship with MFM and other faculty, clinic staff, and clinical contacts at multiple referring clinics in Austin and around the world.
Work closely with faculty and staff at Dell Children’s hospital to facilitate transition to pediatric care.
Contribute to the prenatal Genetic counseling team by providing cross-coverage of clinics, clinical support, needs assessments, and protocol development. Maintain cooperative, professional relationship with other Austin and Texas genetics professionals.
Teach and supervise medical and genetic counseling trainees.
Develop and present formal educational programming to professional and lay audiences
Participate in clinical research and publications as warranted.
Maintain ABGC certification. Obtain and maintain Texas GC license if and when it is passed into law.
Master's degree in Genetic Counseling/Human Genetics or closely related field from an ABGC-Accredited Genetic Counseling training program. Board Certification by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. 5–10 years of Prenatal genetic counseling experience highly preferred. Spanish-speaker preferred. Significant academic achievement preferred. Faculty appointment at Dell Medical School may be available to qualified candidate.
