DESCRIPTION

The Teaching + Learning Commons (the Commons) is the campus-wide innovative infrastructure for comprehensive faculty and student support. It is the executive branch of the EVC for advancing teaching excellence and student success.

The mission of the Commons is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; to be an incubator for student academic success innovations; to increase access to education on campus and beyond; and to advance equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services. Through six unique but integrated hubs, the Commons' work encompasses four areas: instructor support to advance teaching excellence; undergraduate and graduate student support to advance student success at UC San Diego and beyond; intellectual and professional development of graduate and undergraduate students, including Commons' student employees; and equity and inclusion for all UC San Diego students, staff, and educators.

Digital Learning (DL) is part of the Commons and advances teaching and learning excellence and increases access to education on the campus and beyond using digital technologies. Digital Learning's goals are to:

• advance UCSD's vision to innovate and enrich education and promote digital technology to enhance learning

• enhance the university's reputation locally, nationally and globally

• provide support to faculty for online course delivery

• leverage digital technology to increase access to UCSD's research and scholarship

• contribute to research and assessment to advance knowledge in digital learning and inform new pedagogical approaches.

The incumbent provides instructional and program design expertise for the design, development, and support of online courses and specialized educational programs, e.g. academic degrees, academic bridging, career advancement and enrichment. Responsible for assisting faculty in the design of online coursework/programs and instructional practices, development of learning resources and re-visioning of courses and course segments to online delivery methods.

This position works under the general supervision of the Director of Digital Learning (DL), and plays an integral role in supporting the success of the University's online initiatives. Paramount to the success of this position are an in-depth understanding of instructional design theories and methodologies to online course design; an awareness of current trends in instructional software, multimedia applications and web-based educational technologies; an understanding of online course platforms (e.g. Canvas and Open edX); a currency in best practices in online course design; and excellent interpersonal and presentation skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training (such as Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or closely related discipline).

• Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc. Well versed in the application of Universal Design for Learning principles.

• Thorough knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning. Demonstrated fluency using, and training users on platforms including Canvas and Open edX.

• Demonstrated experience integrating online learning courses/certificate programs with one or more learning management systems.

• Thorough knowledge of applying adult learning theories and educational methodologies.
