Specialist -Advisor- Fixed Term - OSS - Support Coordinator
The Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative (NSSC) is an innovative and collaborative organization of experts driving Michigan State University to continually improve the services, practices, and activities for holistic student success. The NSSC promotes academic proficiency, institutional navigation and socio-emotional engagement to promote student success. Our unit is committed to empowering undergraduate students to pursue knowledge, access resources, and develop skills needed for success. Our goals align with the broader institution goals of closing opportunity gaps for underserved (first generation, low-income, Black, Latinx, and/or Native American/Indigenous) students by increasing persistence, retention and graduation rates, and decreasing time to degree. Housed in the Office of the Provost, the unit reports to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education (APUE). The NSSC works closely with Student Affairs and Services, Residential and Hospitality Services and other key units on campus to meet University student success goals.
The Office of Supportive Services (OSS) operates the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program at MSU, which is a grant funded program from the U.S. Department of Education. This grant is funded for the next five years through 2025. The office reports to the Deputy Director for Pathway Programs and Director of the Office of Supportive Services in the Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative. The TRIO SSS program provides academic assistance and support to qualified students to support the attainment of a baccalaureate degree. More specifically, the TRIO SSS program serves students who are first-generation, income qualified, or who have a documented disability. The program operates within a framework of educational equity that addresses academic, class, social, cultural, and financial barriers to student success. The program serves over 600 students annually. Key components of the program include:
Intensive, intrusive professional advising, coaching, and peer mentoring throughout students’ tenure at MSU, designed to address academic, career planning, and socio-emotional aspects of the college experience.
Academic, socio-emotional, and career-oriented programming that supports student success by developing a sense of belonging.
Specialized academic support and tutorial services and an academically focused summer bridge program.
High impact learning experiences such as study abroad, mentoring, internships. and first-year seminars.
Financial literacy, graduate school preparation, and other relevant services.
The TRIO SSS Academic Support Coordinator promotes holistic student development and learning by providing students with academic success skills and resources to engage in meaningful experiences that contribute to student success. The Coordinator of the reports to the Assistant Director of the TRIO SSS Program and will have oversight of the TRIO SSS Tutoring Program. The coordinator is responsible for building a strong culture of tutoring participation and meets with students for coaching appointments as needed in support of grant objectives for retention and graduation. Additionally, the coordinator develops assessment and evaluation strategies for tutoring activities. Because the coordinator will assist in the delivery of student success initiatives, they should have a background in student engagement, advising, or similar 1-on-1 support with students, and a proven commitment to social justice-oriented leadership. Evenings and weekends hours may be required.
Present workshop/seminars on academic success skills (time management, test-taking, note-taking, etc.) and academic engagement.
Develop academic support components of the summer bridge program and serve as program liaison to summer bridge math and writing instructors.
Coordinate all aspects of academic support program for TRIO SSS including the hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluation of peer tutors.
Maintain documentation of peer tutors’ engagement including, but not limited to, contacts, courses, project reports.
Collect, maintain and review outcomes related to use of peer tutors and engagement and make appropriate revisions based on results in order to achieve associated outcomes for student success.
Facilitate tutoring specific programming for TRIO SSS Program participants.
Collaborate with TRIO staff to ensure efficient and effective use of TRIO peer tutors.
Collaborate with campus partners to identify and/or develop support services, programs, and protocols based on assessment data.
Coordinate with The Collaborative Learning Center (CLC) staff regarding peer educator training and academic success skills attainment.
Work with students individually, or in groups, on academic success skills and coaching services.
Coach and provide supplemental advising to assigned student participants.
Assessment and evaluation of academic support offerings to maximize student outcomes.
Continuously engage existing research related to learning theories, learning strategies and best practices related to use of peer tutors and academic support.
Operate and maintain TRIO SSS computer lab.
Work with Marketing, Branding, and Communication Committee to develop marketing material for tutoring program.
Engage in appropriate professional development opportunities across campus, locally, regionally, and nationally.
Participation in TRIO SSS Program education abroad opportunities.
Participation in TRIO SSS Program events, webinars, and trainings.

Masters -Higher Ed., Student affairs, or related field
Experience working with peer educator programs (tutoring, supplemental instruction, academic coaching, etc.) and knowledge of teaching and learning theories

The ideal candidate will have:
experience within a college or university setting;
knowledge of undergraduate student success concepts, theories and/or practice; and experience teaching, advising, leading, and/or mentoring diverse undergraduate students.
Experience working with minoritized/underserved populations through a strengths-based lens.
Personal experience similar to the student population served by the TRIO SSS program.
Previous professional experience with TRIO programs.
Experience creating, organizing, and delivering academic support services including tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic skill development.
Experience with student staff supervision and tutoring technology systems.
Experience evaluating and assessing student/program outcomes.
Familiarity with high impact practices that promote student success
