Lead Advisor

This position is located at the West Lafayette campus.

IUSM-WEST LAFAYETTE (IN-MEDL-IUINA)

The primary role of the Lead Advisor is to provide academic counseling to the students in their cohort. The Lead Advisor serves as the first point of contact for their students. The Lead Advisor serves as an advocate for the students in their cohort and does not assess their learning in a formal capacity.

Lead Advisors arrange individual meetings at least 3 times a year with all students in their cohorts. The goals of the meetings are:

• Providing academic support
• Assisting with professional development and career mentoring
• Assessing personal wellness
• Enhancing the students connection to IU School of Medicine

Specific goals of the meetings are outlined on the Mentoring and Advising Canvas Site which provides resources for both the Lead Advisors and the students. Some of the tasks include:

• Documenting student meetings with Qualtrics Surveys and ADRX advising system
• Working with the ADAA to identify at risk students and implement remediation plans
• Working with the Competency and Course/Clerkship Directors to ensure that appropriate remediation is completed
• Working with the competency directors to ensure that appropriate Area of Concern Interventions are completed
• Producing the MSPE for all MS4 (Phase 3) students
• Tracking each student's progress toward graduation
• Ensuring early Career Mentoring and professional development

As the first point of contact for the students, the Lead Advisors often triage student concerns and ensure appropriate referrals and follow up to include:

• Meeting with students with academic challenges (exam, course, or clerkship failures) and referring to Learning Specialist, Tutor, ADAA
• Meeting with students with wellness concerns and referring to Mental Health Specialists
• Connecting students with appropriate Career Mentors
• Ensuring students meet with their Physician Mentors

Master's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, teaching, academic advising, or a related field.

Combinations of education and related experience may be considered.

Strong communication skills and a team-oriented approach. Strong judgment and decision making skills. Ability to prioritize and organize work in fast-paced environment. Ability to be flexible in meeting the needs of students in a high stress environment.

Experience with professional students and career advising.
