Middle School Math Teacher

We currently have a job opening for a Middle School Math Teacher

East Bay School for Boys—an independent middle school for boys in Berkeley, CA—is looking for a full-time faculty member to be an advisor and math teacher for the 2021-2022 school year. This teacher will report to the Math Department Chair. 

Duties specific to this position include:

• Teaching a mathematics curriculum that is problem-based, student-centered, and Common Core-aligned.
• Collaborating with other math teachers to ensure a cohesive mathematics program across the whole middle school.
• Analyzing results of mathematical skill inventories and implementing appropriately differentiated curriculum; working with Learning Specialists in engaging with families and students to develop and maintain delivery of individual student learning plans.
• Inspiring EBSB students to cultivate a lifelong passion for problem solving, procedural math, and numerical analysis.

In addition, we ask all EBSB teachers to do the following:

• Create and/or adapt differentiated curriculum to work for various learning styles and abilities.
• Implement multiple modes of instruction, including hands-on and project-based learning.
• Exercise a strong and skillful approach to classroom management to create a safe and joyful learning environment that fosters a growth-mindset culture; and incorporate identity-safe and anti-bias educational practices to create an inclusive classroom community that allows a multitude of perspectives to be heard and respected.
• Use a nuanced understanding of issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion to weave current social issues and the themes of equity and social justice into curriculum in a way that is relevant to our students’ lives.
• Write report card comments and guide students through student-led conference preparation.
• Effectively communicate with a diverse parent body.
• Be an adventurer, planning/attending field trips, co-chaperoning an outdoor education overnight trip, and teaching social/emotional curriculum.
• Take on the role of advisor for a small group of students, engaging with each of these students and their family to develop learning plans.
• Participate in team and staff meetings, attend school functions, supervise student breaks, etc.
• Participate on the Admissions Committee and other committees, as needed and appropriate.

Required qualifications specific to this position include:

• A Bachelor of Arts or Science degree and/or professional coursework or certification indicating training applicable to the responsibilities of the position.
• Experience teaching middle school or high school mathematics and familiarity with Common Core mathematics standards for middle school, in preparation for supporting students applying to competitive high schools.
• Proven experience designing supports to differentiate for a wide range of math skills and learning styles.

In addition to the above, the following qualifications are highly desirable:

• A Master’s degree in education or relevant coursework or certification indicating advanced knowledge in areas related to the responsibilities of the position.
• Training in College Preparatory Math (CPM) curriculum.
