Job Summary: The Assistant Director of the Center for Inclusive Communities is an integral part of the daily operation of the Center for Inclusive Communities (CIC), within the Office of Student Involvement and Inclusion (OSII), as well as the Division of Student Life. The goals of the CIC are to enhance student flourishing by supporting the immediate and long-term success of Furman's historically underrepresented students; developing global leaders by inviting all students to critically consider issues of diversity and inclusion; and growing co-curricular community engagement as a means of strengthening the student experience.
Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Inclusive Communities, the Assistant Director provides leadership and support for the programs and services related to the University's underrepresented student populations, and specifically supports international students. Direct support to individual students includes general counseling and referral to other established support services on campus. The Assistant Director should develop the appropriate information channels to inform historically underrepresented student populations of scholarships, internships, entertainment and social activities, employment opportunities, and other educationally developmental opportunities. The Assistant Director supports the University community by understanding and responding to the unique needs of international students, and serving as a liaison with academic and administrative units involved in international education. Additionally, the Assistant Director advises the Student Diversity Council which serves as the umbrella organization for Furman's cultural and identity-based student groups. The Assistant Director plans and coordinates the CIC's annual heritage and awareness month programming. Finally, the Assistant Director assists the CIC team on Safe Zone trainings and intergroup dialogue initiatives.
The Assistant Director collaborates with colleagues in the CIC and OSII to further strategic initiatives related to diversity and inclusion, new student orientation, programming, student center operations, student activities and student organizations. In so doing, the Assistant Director supports the mission of the OSII to create a vibrant campus in which students enjoy a broad experience within a close-knit community. Finally, the Assistant Director supports the learning outcomes of the Division of Student Life.
International Student Support
Provides vision and expertise in the areas of international student support services, community building and student centered programs; as well as campus-wide intercultural activities and workshops. Coordinates, organize, and implement a comprehensive International Student Orientation and host family program in the fall (and spring, if needed). Coordinate with the Dean of International Admissions on issuing initial I-20 forms.
Identifies best practices and apply new, creative approaches to enhance global student learning and cross-cultural competencies of both international and domestic students.
Prepares and revise various publications, website content and other communications directed to international students.
In partnership with relevant offices, researches and disseminates information to students on local services related to banking, taxes, transportation, counseling, healthcare, health insurance, immunizations, and other applicable resources of interest to international students.
Partners with The Rinker Center for Study Away and International Education to support exchange students as appropriate.
Serves as a designated school official (DSO) for Furman's degree-seeking students and work closely with the Director of the Center for Inclusive Communities who serves as the primary designated school official (PDSO) and (RO), and the Dean of International Admissions who serves as a DSO.
Advises students on immigration procedures and requirements for maintaining their immigration status, including participation in study away programs, course requirements, etc.
Assists with electronic reporting/monitoring of data for all student visas for degree-seeking students in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Assist in University compliance with the Department of Homeland Security and Department of State regulations by working closely with other University departments.
Student Organization Support and Programming
Advises the Student Diversity Council (SDC), which is comprised of cultural- and identity-based student organizations and other student organizations with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion. The purpose of SDC is to coordinate the programming of member organizations, encourage and promote diversity engagement, to enhance diversity relations on campus, and to allocate funds to its member organizations. Attend weekly meetings, advise student leadership in the daily operations of the organization, assist with programmatic efforts, and serve as a liaison between SDC and the administration.
Maintains relationships with faculty and staff advisors for cultural- and identity-based student organizations.
Serves as fiscal officer for SDC, ensuring all fiduciary commitments and budgetary obligations are met.
Serves as the co-advisor to the International Student Association (FUISA), alongside a faculty or staff advisor.
Coordinates and implement CIC-sponsored heritage and awareness month programming, including but not limited to, Hispanic Heritage Month, LGBT History Month, Native American Heritage Month, International Education Week, Black History Month, and Women's History Month. Collaborate with CIC staff members, student organizations, University departments, and community partners as appropriate.
Serves as a consultant for SDC member organization leaders to provide guidance on University policies, best practices, vendor and venue recommendations, and planning resources.
Assists in developing and evaluating assessment planning, strategic thinking and planning, learning outcomes, and goals and objectives coordinated with the mission and vision statements of the University, the Division of Student Life and the Office of Student Involvement and Inclusion.
Works closely with the Student Involvement and Inclusion staff in the implementation of strategic initiatives and departmental programs.
Serves as a Level One On-Call Crisis Responder for the Division of Student Life (24-hour on-call rotation).
Facilitates Safe Zone workshops to the campus community.
Assists with the Intergroup Dialogue initiative, and peer facilitator training as needed.
Serves on the Bias Incident Response & Support Team.
Serves on the Student Conduct Board.
Serves on other campus committees as assigned.
Conducts professional development activities, with approval by the Director, and maintains volunteer activities with a chosen professional association as appropriate
Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and University goals.

Reports To: Director of the Center for Inclusive Communities
Work is performed independently on routine work, non-routine issues or questions are referred to the supervisor.
Master's degree in International Education, Cultural Studies, Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or other related field required.
1-3 years of experience in the development and implementation of international student services-related programs in higher education is preferred (graduate work may be considered).
Understanding of student development and identity development theories and practical applications is essential. Demonstrated interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion issues and intercultural intelligence/cultural humility work is required.
Experience working, living, or studying abroad, as well as fluency in one or more languages others than English is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to research, comprehend, analyze, and apply immigration regulations is required. Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 visas, including Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVIS) reporting requirements and awareness of Department of Homeland Security as well as Department of State, regulations is preferred.
Experience as a designated school official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) is preferred. Must meet federal eligibility requirements to be a DSO and ARO, including US citizenship and permanent residence.
Experience with student organization advising is preferred.
Must have excellent organizational skills and strong communication skills.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
Customer service oriented.
Ability to interact with a diverse population and maintain a positive attitude in time of crisis.
Understanding of the importance of student learning outcomes and assessment preferred.
