Position Title: Temporary Counselor, Law School Classification Title: PT Temporary City/Campus: Detroit - Riverfront Department: Law Student Services Position Status: Part Time - Temporary Position Summary: The Counselor will be a leader in addressing mental health and wellness in the Detroit Mercy Law student population. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, this position will be an integral part of the Student Affairs team in the support of wellness of Law students. This position will provide a wide range of counseling and other services to professional students, as well as providing consultation, resources, and campus and community-based resources to faculty and staff concerning their student interaction. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (1) Student Counseling & Assistance -Provide short-term confidential counseling to and risk assessment for Law students via teletherapy and, when appropriate, in-person appointments, drop-in hours, and direct referrals from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and other faculty and staff; -Refer students to campus and community resources and assist in coordinating and developing long-term care plans where necessary; -Manage caseload of Law student issues; -Work collaboratively with Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and other faculty and staff, to anticipate needs of Law students and offer outreach to students in need; - Work collaboratively with the Director for Student Affairs, Campus Outreach & Inclusion to identify mental health needs of marginalized populations, and offer strategies and outreach to address these needs. -Design and facilitate group workshop programs targeting Law students; -Provide consultation to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and other Law faculty and staff on student issues. (2) Outreach & Collaboration —Create, coordinate, and evaluate workshops and trainings for Law students regarding wellness best practices, mental health care and resources, and other topics relevant to Law student wellbeing. It is anticipated that these sessions will be delivered using online platforms; -Create and facilitate workshops and trainings for Law faculty and staff on topics relevant to Law student well-being; -Serve on the Committee for Law Student Wellness and serve as an administration liaison to the Student Bar Association and the Law Student Wellness Coalition on wellness-related issues; -Identify and recommend additional outreach opportunities targeting Law students; -As needed, participate on campus committees and work groups to represent the needs. (3) Other -Advance the mission of student support and well-being through day-to-day responsibilities and special projects; -Keep up-to-date on the literature and developments regarding lawyer and law student well-being, and the approaches law schools are taking to address law student mental health concerns; -Work with campus resources and engage in practices that enhance social justice and inclusivity; -All other duties as assigned Education (Minimum/Preferred): A college degree and a professional certificate or graduate degree. Experience (Minimum/Preferred): - Two years to five years - A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience providing counseling and student support services. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ideal candidate will have (desired): - Experience working with professional or graduate students, especially law students; – Experience in delivery teletherapy; - Experience in brief intervention, mental health crisis assessment, and group workshops; - Experience in consultation and collaboration with campus and community-based resources and partners; - Evidence of being self-motivated and self-directed; - Evidence of excellent written and oral communication and organization skills; – Demonstrated commitment to social justice and inclusivity in a multicultural learning environment; Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with diverse student populations, including international students; - Experience giving presentations and facilitating discussions in an online environment. Physical Requirements: Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds). Work Environment: Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
