Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the incumbent functions as part of a team of Assistant Deans providing comprehensive support to SIPA's student population of over 1300 students across seven degree programs while also serving as a diversity liaison for the School. The incumbent is charged with advancing the overall mission of the University, SIPA, and the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), and enhancing the student experience at the School. Responsibilities span all aspects of OSA operations including academic advising, academic policies and requirements, registration, the fellowship process and assistantship program, student life, discipline (involving academic integrity and social misconduct) and student events and outreach. OSA is committed to excellence in student service and seeks professionals with experience assessing student needs, as well as designing, planning and delivering graduate student programs. Candidates with international education experience and/or experience working with international student populations are preferred.
At the direction of both the Associate Dean and the Faculty Chair of SIPA's Diversity Committee, provides strategic direction and managerial support for all aspects of the Committee's work, including programming, budget, membership, faculty relations, public relations/marketing, annual reports and partnerships with other Columbia University offices.
Serves as a liaison and point of contact for issues of diversity, inclusion and equity (DE&I). Manages partnerships among SIPA offices and units, as well as Columbia-wide offices and programs.
Advises full-time MIA and MPA two-year students on course selection, registration issues and degree requirements while serving as their officially assigned academic advisor.
Under the direction of the Associate Dean and in partnership with other Assistant Deans and colleagues across SIPA, works creatively to support students and to design activities and engagement strategies to promote a shared sense of community. Assumes primary responsibility for managing student life activities at SIPA, including but not limited to student organizations, OSA's Peer Advisor Program, student leadership training, and DE&I orientation and workshops throughout the year for students.
Works closely with approximately 50 registered student groups and liaises with SIPA Administration on their behalf, overseeing and assisting them and other students in developing social, professional, community, and cultural programs for the student body. Serves as liaison between students and outside organizations (i.e. vendors, equipment companies, etc.), and assumes primary responsibility for the online student engagement platform (currently CampusGroups).
With all staff members of OSA, participates in developing and coordinating all activities and events sponsored by the office. Liaises with various Columbia university-wide student services providers regarding information and resources available to SIPA students.
Serves as a person on-call for student emergencies and as a Delegate for the University, and serves as a hearing officer for student disciplinary cases when requested by the Associate Dean.
Serves as a member of SIPA's Admissions Committee. Reads up to 200 applications annually as determined by the Associate Dean in close consultation with the Executive Director of Admissions and Financial Aid.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent required. Minimum of four years' related experience essential. Commitment to DE&I and previous participation in advancing DE&I objectives is essential.
Ability to work independently and adapt to shifting priorities, to work with a wide range of constituencies, and to manage multiple projects simultaneously essential. Must have strong computer skills including thorough familiarity with the use of spreadsheets. Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills. Superior writing ability and overall communication skills with diverse audiences are essential. International education experience and cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to prepare and deliver presentations to diverse audiences of students, faculty and staff are required.
Advanced degree strongly preferred. Knowledge of the field of International Affairs or Public Administration, as well as SIPA, highly desirable. Familiarity with SIS, SSOL, CampusGroups, and various social media platforms preferred. Experience/familiarity with budgets and financial management preferred.
