Thayer Academy is seeking a qualified Middle School English teacher and advisor for the 2021/2022 academic year. Candidates should have three to five years of English teaching experience and be prepared to teach 7th and 8th grade, classes devoted to introducing students to a wide variety of literary genres and to nurturing student confidence and competence with expression. Additional responsibilities will include offering daily sports or electives and the possibility of English Department Chair for the candidate with ample experience.
The ideal candidate will possess a love of the middle school age child, be a team player who can work collaboratively with colleagues, and should have at least 3-5 years English teaching experience. A Bachelor’s degree is required, and a Master’s degree is preferred.
In addition, the candidate should be able to demonstrate many of the following:
Experience teaching a wide variety of literary genres
Confidence in teaching basic English grammar, including the parts-of-speech, simple sentence structures, and types of phrases and clauses
Facility with teaching creative, expository, and analytical writing
Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community
Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and the impact it has on the classroom climate and curriculum
High levels of comfort and experience with technology
Experience in Design Thinking or Project Based Learning curriculum development
Ability to communicate effectively with students and families
Curriculum design and assessment experience
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Ability to lift/move 10 lbs. and occasionally lift/move 30 lbs.
Specific vision abilities include close vision.
Regularly required to stand: walk: sit and reach with hands and arms.

Thayer Academy is an independent, college-preparatory day school for boys and girls in grades 5 - 12. It was founded in 1877 by the bequest of General Sylvanus Thayer, “Father of the U.S. Military Academy” at West Point and founder of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College.
