Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a Middle School Latin Teacher for spring semester 2020. Responsibilities Language instruction at Lakeside Middle School is rigorous. Students take language every year (French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese or Latin). Classes meet 3-4 times a week and the goal at every level is literary proficiency. The Latin teacher will join Middle School faculty committed to providing the best educational experience possible for our 5th-8th grade students. Specific responsibilities include:
Teach four classes
Teach a diverse student body with varying experiences and exposure to language instruction with an emphasis on building literary proficiency and exploring the culture and history of the Roman world;
Provide academic support outside of the classroom for students with different learning styles and strengths
Collaborate and participate in the work of the language department on innovative, inclusive and equitable curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment practices;
Write evaluations of students four times during the year;
Attend department and faculty meetings as scheduled;
Act as an advisor for 8-9 Middle School students;
Potentially teach one section of Upper School Latin, and
Participate in the life of the school community which includes grade-level outings, admissions events, faculty meetings, grade-level meetings, and general engagement with student life
Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in Latin or Classics.
Experience teaching at a middle-school level or working with middle-school aged students in some other capacity,
Experience working with a reading-based Latin text, and has an extensive knowledge of Roman culture and history.
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
Integrates different perspectives and identities (such as race, class, gender, ethnicity, sexual preferences, etc.) into curriculum and class activities
Creates an inclusive learning environment where all students feel seen, valued and heard
Collaborate on a teaching team
Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
