Upper School | Technical Theater Teacher | Part Time | 2021-2022

Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for a Technical Theater teacher. This .75 FTE position is responsible for management of theaters on the upper and middle school campuses, and teaching two sections of Theater Production and Design at the Upper School. The ideal candidate will join a diverse team of colleagues that constantly reflects upon best practices and explores new ways to best serve students, families, and peers recognizing the different experiences people have with independent schools and theater arts. Each year approximately 250 students participate in drama classes, 5 major productions, playwriting workshops, and a variety of class performances. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of safe theater operation during COVID and be able to lead the transition to a post-COVID environment. Review of candidates will begin on February 19th.

Functions and Responsibilities

1. Support a diverse student population and their families who come to school with different and evolving lived experiences
2. Responsible for set design and construction shows for plays, musicals, and other drama productions as needed.
3. Oversee or assist with all functions and events that take place in the performing arts buildings each week, including running sound, lights and AV equipment.
4. Collaborate with AV manager, facilities, and faculty to ensure professional operation for all events in the theaters.
5. Coordinate maintenance and upkeep of all theater assets including maintaining relationships and contracts with vendors.
6. Lead front of house operation.
7. Support drama teachers with maintenance of prop and costume collections.
8. Manage and coordinate the performing arts calendars.
9. Serve as an Upper School advisor to a group of approximately 8 students.
10. Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own, and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks. 
2. Bachelor’s degree in theater or related field preferred. Candidates with equivalent  professional training and teaching experience will also be considered.
3. Ability to design curriculum that supports students with varying abilities, cultural traditions, and perspectives.
4. Demonstrated experience directing or supporting theater productions for middle and high school age students
5. Demonstrated knowledge of both traditional and contemporary theater repertoire, including works by diverse playwrights and cultural traditions
6. Familiarity with theatrical styles and productions from a variety of cultures
7. Excellent interpersonal skills and strong organizational ability
8. Creative, joyful approach to learning and teaching
9. Excellent written and oral communication skills
10. Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
