This position is responsible for supporting the efforts of the JHUnions & Programming Office, primarily in the areas of student organization advisement and programming. The coordinator for JHUnions and Programming is part of a professional staff team in the JHUnions & Programming Office, a unit within the Department of Student Life.
The Coordinator of Student Events and Union Programming are responsible for the development, implementation, and management of a comprehensive set of campus-wide programs that enhance life on campus and promotes student engagement and builds community at Hopkins through the use of our student centers, particularly focusing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. The coordinators report to the Director of JHUnions and programming and work with the director to provide advising and guidance to our major student programming boards, supervises the student JHUnions Monitors and Building Managers who run the JHUnions facilities, supports the development of students in their leadership roles, and plans major traditions events.

Essential Job Functions: Advising and Supervision:
Advise and oversee the major programming boards in program planning and leadership development including the selection and training of new members and leadership.
Responsible for the recruiting, hiring, training and supervision of over 45 JHUnions Student Monitors, 3 Student Managers, and 3 Assistant Managers for JHUnions facilities. Schedule hours and shift changes, facilitate weekly staff meetings, semester retreat training programs, and student appreciation events serving as the main point of contact for JHUnions student staff.
Assist with SGA Class Council programming and signature events, supporting throughout the year the councils’ programming and event planning.
Serve as an advisor and liaison to a wide array of registered student organizations and advise individual students and student groups in event planning and management with regard to university policy and event risk management.
Program Development and Implementation:
Manage all aspects of signature campus traditions events such as Blue Jay Opening Day, First/Last Day of Classes, Mattin Center Halloween, Lighting of the Quads, Commemoration Day Ball, and large concerts.
Collaborate with staff and student groups conducting programming including Athletics, Residential Life, Diversity & Inclusion, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Orientation & First Year Experience, Alumni Programs, etc.
Assess and mitigate potential risk factors associated with student and staff programs, and suggest updates to policies and/or procedures.
Provide crisis intervention using professional judgment and discretion to stabilize situations, investigate and resolve concerns, and coordinate notifications.
Update and maintain the Event Planning Guide.
Assist in the development and maintenance of the on-line events calendar, the JHUnions & Programming website, and other social media.
Other duties as assigned.
Manage budgets for signature campus traditions events totaling $120,000, including monthly budget reviews.
Advise student programming groups on the responsible management of budget allocations totaling over $450,000, in accordance with University policy.
Education / Experience:
High School Diploma/GED and five years related experience required.
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
