Upper School Learning Specialist

Reports to: Director of Student Support

POSITION SUMMARY

Student Instruction and Support (Grades 9-12)

• Work with Upper School (US) students as needed in one-on-one, small groups, or class settings to support individual learning needs and/or challenges, including teaching academic skills, executive functioning skills, study skills, and/or test taking skills
• Work in partnership with parents, students, faculty, and administrators to interpret and understand psychoeducational testing and other relevant assessments to develop, monitor, and update learning plans (ILPs), medical accommodation plans, weekly progress reports, or other services for Upper School students
• Monitor student progress and initiate weekly progress reports when needed
• Engage and encourage students in the active process of learning; help students develop and maintain accountability for their actions related to learning
• Organize and teach a peer tutoring program for Upper School students to support younger peers
• Utilize school learning management systems such as PowerSchool, Google Classroom, and TeacherEase to track student progress
• Collaborate with student support personnel and Deans of Students to coordinate wellness programs and courses, including additional teaching duties as assigned

Communication, Collaboration, and Consultation

• Provide parents, teachers, administrators, counselors, and/or outside parties with specific information about a student’s learning, academic performance, classroom instruction, and effective instructional techniques
• Facilitate the completion of Release Forms for collaborating with outside professionals
• Consult with teachers periodically to follow up on identified students and how best to work with students and their parents and to brainstorm academic strategies
• Coordinate with students, parents, and outside professionals to process standardized testing accommodation requests (College Board/ACT) as needed
• Make referrals and facilitate the process of outside evaluations as appropriate
• Work with outside therapists, medical doctors, educational therapists, and other treatment providers to provide emotional, social, and educational support to MS/US students and their families as needed
• Work with colleagues (K-12) as needed for student support or transitions
• Participate meaningfully in student support meetings, division faculty meetings, and Roll Call meetings
• Work collaboratively with Learning Specialists, counselors, nurses, and DEI team to create comprehensive systems of student support K-12
• Collaborate with Deans of Students, Counselors, and Head Advisors in Student of Concern meetings for Upper School students
• Engage substantively in the life of the school outside the classroom
• Attend faculty meetings, retreats, Miniature School nights and other Upper School functions
• Make presentations on learning challenges and academic support for students, parents, and faculty as needed
• Lead and participate in professional development/professional learning communities, collaborate with colleagues, and assume other duties as assigned

ASSOCIATED RESPONSIBILITIES

• Keep necessary documentation and engage in ethical and legal practices and decision making
• Communicate promptly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues
• Keep information systems up-to-date, including class calendars, grading software, and class websites
• Be available from 7:45 am until 3:45 pm on days when school is in session
• Attend all relevant faculty and school events (August Week, back-to-school night, parent-teacher conferences, assemblies, graduation, etc.)
• Cover classes or duties for absent colleagues as requested
• Serve as a faculty advisor for designated students in grades 9-12
• Supervise students as assigned, such as chaperoning, lunchtime supervision, student trips, and study hall
