DESCRIPTIONThe Department of NanoEngineering is the 6th and newest department in the Irwin and Joan Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego. This is a young and vibrant interdisciplinary engineering department that provides an exciting and inclusive environment that promotes discovery and excellence in a wide range of engineering, scientific, entrepreneurial and professional areas with over 650 undergraduate students, 175 graduate students and 29 faculty. This department's interdisciplinary nature results in collaborations with undergraduates, graduates and faculty from many other disciplines within the Jacobs School of Engineering and across campus enabling us to create new and exciting research opportunities. Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures; resolves a wide range of issues in imaginative as well as practical ways. Performs short- and long-term planning for the organization. May supervise staff or students. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Under direction of the Management Services Officer (MSO), has independent administrative responsibility for the fiscal unit of the NanoEngineering Department. Oversees funding for over 400 separately budgeted federal, state and private accounts totaling over $18M. Assist in the analysis, development, implementation and refinement of new and existing department policies, affiliations and agreements. Supervise directly 4 full-time staff and provides work direction to an additional 4 full-time staff whose responsibilities include research administration, purchasing, seminar coordination, reimbursement processing, graduate advising for financials and human resources. Provide support to faculty and other academic personnel in the acquisition and administration of research funding. Oversee the computerization of all procedures related to administration's day-to-day operations. Work closely with programmer analysts in the development and implementation of computer programs to streamline and automate fiscal processes and reports. Organize, develop, document and implement best practices for fiscal affairs that are in compliance with UC policies and federal, state and local regulations. Develop standards that meet audit requirements and proper business practices and ethics. Actively participate in the long and short term goals of the department. Serve as a confidential assistant to the MSO and in an advisory capacity to the Chair. Must be able to work overtime as needed.
