Dean of Faculty/Employees

Rye Country Day School is seeking a Dean of Faculty/Employees beginning August 2021. The Dean of Faculty/Employees is a senior administrator who works in partnership with the Head of School to ensure that the school delivers on its mission and vision through dedicated support of the faculty/employees. The Dean of Faculty/Employees reports to the Head of School and works to strengthen faculty/employee culture, promote a clear sense of shared purpose, retain faculty/employees, and align the school’s mission and its program.

Rye Country Day School is a coeducational, Prek-12, college preparatory school located in Westchester County, New York dedicated to providing students with an excellent education using both traditional and innovative approaches. The Dean of Faculty/Employees will:

• Be the voice of the faculty/employee perspective
  • Articulate implications and ramifications of policy for faculty/employees with senior administration
  • Ensure an open channel of communication exists between administrators and faculty/employees
  • Advocate for practices and policies that promote balance and wellness for faculty/employees
• Provide dedicated support for faculty/employees
  • Listen and respond to concerns
  • Mentor new faculty/employees, including through onboarding and orientation, department-based mentoring
  • Tend to faculty/employee culture; work to create a sense of community and collegiality among employees
• Guide and support the faculty/employee development and evaluation system; refine as necessary to reflect the school’s mission and evolving initiatives
  • Support faculty/employees when experiencing both success and growth
  • Assist with difficult conversations/relationships/issues/feedback
  • Ensure that employees meet professional standards and receive proper professional development and guidance when they do not meet standards
  • Help orchestrate meaningful professional development that keeps faculty/employees engaged and energized
• Assist senior administration with faculty/employee recruitment
• Provide dedicated support for Department Chairs
  • Provide social-emotional support to employees, alleviating Department Chairs when employee social-emotional issues become heightened
  • Assist with the departmental external peer review process
  • Assist with staffing decisions for courses and sections
  • Assist with the logistics of processes such as substitute coverage, book ordering, etc.
  • Assist with assessing the scope and sequence of the curriculum
  • Oversee the Atlas Rubicon database
  • Monitor and support collegiality within academic departments and among academic departments
  • Visit classes of department members on a periodic basis
• Demonstrate an approach that is nurturing and supportive of students and faculty; model the characteristics of the ideal educator at RCDS
• Support the School’s mission and philosophy as well as strategic initiatives
• Serve on the Academic Affairs Committee and the Curriculum Council
• Communicate professionally and effectively with administrators, colleagues, and parents
• Teach one or two classes, as appropriate
