Upper School Academic Dean & Dean of Students

St. Andrew’s Episcopal School seeks an Upper School Academic Dean & Dean of Students to start August 1, 2021.  The major role of each grade level academic dean is to oversee the academic program for each student in the grade.  The Dean of Students supports co-curricular clubs and activities, shares responsibility for implementing an Advisor Program and is responsible for responding to minor disciplinary infractions.

Job Description

The academic dean will:

1. At the beginning of the school year, meet with students to discuss changing schedules, in consultation with each student’s advisor and parents. Schedule any new, late arriving, students.
2. Coordinate and schedule parent conferences upon request of the student’s family or recommendation by the school.
3. Lead the discussion on students’ achievement at faculty meetings at the interim period and at the end of each trimester.
4. Throughout the year, meet with individual students to discuss difficulties as they arise.
5. Attend grade-level advisor meetings to gather information on students. Decisions are made at these meetings as to who will contact the student or parents, if necessary.
6. In early February, write special paragraphs, if necessary, to be added to a student’s contract letter reinforcing academic expectations for the remainder of the year to assure a student will be invited to return the following year stating summer school courses required.  Contract “hold” letters are written for a student experiencing acute academic difficulty.
7. In February, assist in advising students in the selection of the following year’s courses, helping each student to create the strongest possible academic reputation.
8. Monitor excessive absences and tardies to school or to class, urging each student to take full academic responsibility in each course.
9. At year’s end, write a summary letter to each student who has experienced academic difficulty restating recommendations for summer work or required summer school attendance.
10. The Dean of Students works with the Assistant Head of Upper School to manage discipline in the US.  The Dean of Students responds to minor disciplinary infractions, which include:

  • Student Parking
  • Attendance/Tardies/Skipping Class, advisor period, or assemblies
  • Being sent out of class for the first time
  • Cell phone violations
  • After School Detention

11. Co-coordinates the advisor program with the Assistant Head of Upper School.
12. Teaches two or three academic classes or performs equivalent non-academic duties.
