The Learning Specialist provides direct support and program planning for the academic development of students so that they can thrive in an academically focused environment. Implement an academic support approach to assess and support students and teachers in diverse classroom environments
Read and interpret educational evaluations for parents, teachers, and admissions
Develop learning accommodation plans for students with diagnosed learning differences
Communicate proactively with parents/guardians regarding student challenges and progress
Work with administration, teachers, students, and parents to: 1) identify students without accommodation plans who need additional support, 2) create short-term support plans, 3) document the progress, 4) keep all parties informed and up to date.
Maintains organized lists of students on their accommodation plan caseload and students with short-term support plans
Collaborate with administrators, classroom teachers, middle school counselor, parents, and outside educational professionals to support students with learning needs
Teach and support faculty to provide differentiated learning in the classroom through one-on-one meetings, department/divisional meetings, and professional development workshops
Develop and maintain a program to teach students individually or in small groups academic and executive functioning study skills
Organize and coordinate parent education initiatives
Serve as the program director for standardized testing.
Overseeing testing schedule
Advise departments on the use of testing results
Analyze and interpret testing results to make yearly recommendations to administrators and department chairs
Coordinate in-house accommodations and ensure plans are in place and maintained with testing agencies
Understands and exercises confidentiality with regard to student personal and educational information
Participate in committee, department, and staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events that would benefit from the area of expertise.
Degree in education or related field, or equivalent experience. Degree in Special Ed preferred.
1-3 years of experience supporting students with learning challenges, preferably at the middle school level. Classroom teaching experience is also preferred.
Experience with learning disabilities, psycho-educational tests, and reports
Knowledge and experience with multiple learning challenges along with tools and approaches that best support these needs.
Expertise in administering and interpreting assessments and test results, academic achievement, and diagnostic testing
Demonstrated skills in innovative approaches to student learning and support using technology.
Proven expertise in differentiating instruction for diverse learning needs
Technologically savvy. Proven comfort in multiple software and related other technologies.
Demonstrated success with different adolescent needs across grades 6-8.
Exhibits an abiding passion and experience working with a diverse student body.
