Foster School of Business at the University of Washington is seeking an inclusive, creative, collaborative Senior Academic Counselor. The Senior Academic Counselor joins a world-class business school in a pioneering city perched on the Pacific Rim. The Senior Academic Counselor’s primary function will be to provide academic advising to prospective and current students, conduct presentations and lead orientations, perform a wide range of duties related to all phases of students’ academic experience as a business major, and provide programmatic and administrative support to undergraduate programs. Examples of administrative duties that are part of the position include: project assignments and assessments, processing admission applications, and interfacing with faculty and staff across campus and at other educational institutions. Individual and group advising of students via drop-in or appointments, Zoom, phone or email contact: 60% Advise and case manage an assigned group of students enrolled in Foster degree programs: • Provide one-on-one meetings with diverse current business students assigned to your case load (Freshman Direct, Transfer, Standard admits). • Discuss time-to-degree, graduation planning, option selection and registration as it relates to career objectives. • Counsel students experiencing academic or personal hardships and make referrals to appropriate campus resources when necessary. • Document interactions with students via on-line record keeping system. • Assist students through the University administrative system. • Conduct new student orientations and Freshman Direct Seminar. Advise prospective students: • Meet with high school, UW pre-majors and transfer students to discuss the benefits of a Foster degree and the admission process (prerequisites, admission tests, deadlines). • Communicate competitive nature of program and strategize best approaches to enhance admission possibilities. • Counsel students on match between career objectives and Foster School opportunities as well as alternative educational options. • Conduct information sessions and workshops to groups from 10 to 75 participants. May include outreach to feeder schools for presentation or college fairs. • Meet one-on-one with and advise applicants denied to the Foster School by discussing strategy and alternate programs. • Provide regular drop-in advising hours. Administrative projects: • Evaluate diverse applicants for admission to the Undergraduate Program. • Act as a resource for advising and student service colleagues across campus and other educational institutions in Washington State. • Work with the Registrar’s Office and other units on campus to help students resolve problems appropriately. • Promptly respond to email and in-person requests from students, faculty, and staff. • Collect and analyze data related to enrolled students, program performance and other benchmarks identified by the Undergraduate Programs Office. • Other projects could include but are not limited to: honors, satisfactory progress checks, maintaining data on enrolled students, composing and compiling student surveys, course equivalency evaluation, advising specialized populations (EOP, minors), conducting final degree checks, Professional Sales Certificate, student case management, business minors. Activities supporting the mission of Undergraduate Programs (advising, career, diversity, and student services): • Serve and participate on Foster and University committees as assigned or designated. • Support Foster Undergraduate Programs events and participate fully in a fast-moving team environment where everyone is expected to roll-up their sleeves and contribute whenever possible. • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Advising or the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs. Administrative lead on projects supporting the undergraduate program as specified above. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Master's Degree in higher education, counseling, business or related fields. • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in student counseling, academic advising, student services or related experience. • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail. • Demonstrated verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. • Experience and desire to work with a diverse group of students. • Dependable and responsible with the ability to problem solve, make independent decisions based on University and Business School policies and guidelines, balance multiple tasks, and manage complex workloads with competing priorities. • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, high volume, team-oriented and collaborative office setting. • Capacity to adapt and apply technology and information systems. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • Strong technological skills and experience with multiple software platforms, including degree audit systems, and student information systems. • Project management skills. • Experience and comfort with delivering presentations, assessments, recruitment and advising of students as related to a competitive program. • Familiarity with the administrative structure of a large university. • Experience working and communicating successfully with faculty. WORK CONDITIONS: • Academic Counselors-Senior are professional staff. • The hours of work are typically 40 hours a week in a private space. • Possible evening and weekend Application Process: The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
