The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Counselor/ Psychological Services and Personal Counseling, De Anza College and Foothill College (2 positions, 1 at each college). This temporary position (1-year assignment) is funded by the California Community College Mental Health Services Grant sponsored by the California Community College Chancellor's Office. The purpose of this grant is to enable districts/colleges receiving an award to establish or expand an existing California Community Colleges Mental Health Services Program. The Grant term is Summer 2020 through Fall 2021.

The ideal candidate will share the Foothill-De Anza Community College District's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. Foothill College serves approximately 13,000 students per term, of which 29.7% are Asian, 27.3% LatinX, 25.5% White, 5.0% Filipino, 4.9% African American, 1.2% Pacific Islander, and 0.50% Native American as of Fall 2019. At Foothill, 68.6% of students are students of color and 29% apply for financial aid. De Anza College serves approximately 19,000 students per term, of which 40.9% are Asian, 27.4% LatinX, 17.4% White, 6.7% Filipino, 3.7% African American, .08% Pacific Islander, and .03% Native American, 3.7% Decline to state as of Fall 2019. At De Anza, 82.6% of students are students of color and 49% receive financial aid. JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to Dean of Student Development and EOPS at De Anza College or the Dean of Student Services at Foothill College, the Psychological Services Counselor will provide a full range of counseling and clinical services for De Anza and Foothill College's diverse student population. Specific duties include referral to campus and community resources to secure basic needs and to ensure continuity of therapeutic care; consultation with faculty, staff and administrators regarding mental health issues; develop strategies and activities that foster student wellness and campus safety.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
Operating from a strong equity lens, the Psychological Services Counselor will:
  • Provide intake, evaluation, brief therapy, and personal counseling to enrolled students in the Foothill-De Anza Community College District.
  • Provide in-service to faculty, staff, and administrators regarding mental health needs within communities of color including racial trauma, effective outreach and programming, and culturally relevant approaches to mental health services.
  • Support social justice, equity, and awareness in staffing, curriculum, programs, and service delivery.
  • Further the district's commitment to global, cultural, and social awareness through the praxis of equity, social justice, and multicultural education.
  • Further Foothill College's commitment to supporting Black Lives Matter by assisting with developing and maintaining the department's Black Lives Matter action plan (Foothill position only).
  • Further De Anza College's commitment to support diverse student populations developing and maintaining department Equity in Mental Health Action Plan.
  • Develop strategies and activities that foster student wellness and campus safety, such as outreach and prevention events and services, including those specifically designed for transgender students, foster youth, veterans, and homeless students.
  • Crisis assessment and response via Maxient.
  • Case management; referral to campus and community resources to secure student basic needs and to ensure continuity of therapeutic care.
  • Develop formal partnerships with local county behavioral health departments and/or community-based organizations to establish longer-term referral networks for students in need of ongoing mental health services.
  • Assist in the implementation of program plans and final reports for grant programs and services.
  • Participate in the department program review and Student Learning Outcome (SLO) development and evaluation process.
  • Participate in the development of department goals and objectives and assessment of resource needs.
  • Collaborate with college staff to develop informational materials such as brochures, newsletters, and handbooks.
  • Review legislation, codes, policies, and procedures related to the assigned program.
  • Provide information and interpretation of regulations and guidelines to students, faculty, and the community regarding programs and services.
  • Develop relationships with campus faculty, staff, student clubs and local community-based resources to implement equity-minded mental health and wellness education strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attendance at department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of a faculty member. Faculty will also have the opportunity to serve on District and college committees and participate in co-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Master's Degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy, OR equivalent.
  3. Possession of California Mental Health License. (LPCC, LMFT, LCSW, PsyD, PhD)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Recent professional clinical counseling experience in a mental health setting working with communities of color, particularly African, African American, and the greater African diaspora communities, and understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups within higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
  2. Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the impact that discrimination, racial trauma, anti-blackness, anti-immigrant, campus racial-climate, imposter syndrome, stigma, cultural mistrust, and feelings of isolation has on the mental health and well-being of community college students from diverse racial, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, disability, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds and identities.
  3. Thorough understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by students of color, particularly African, African American, and the greater African diaspora communities in higher education.
  4. Demonstrated proficiency in strategies, practices, and clinical therapy approaches that best meet the needs of community college students from diverse racial, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, disability, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds and identities.
  5. Experience in assisting clients with securing resources for mental health/wellness and basic needs.
  6. Experience providing crisis counseling to transitional age youth and adult populations.
  7. Experience providing culturally relevant counseling services to diverse student populations.
  8. Clinical experience in groups, individuals, and couples using brief treatment models.

Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:
  1. Development of anti-racist student-centered strategies to address and connect underserved campus populations to mental health and wellbeing resources.
  2. Develop relationships with campus faculty, staff, student clubs and local community-based resources to implement equity-minded mental health and wellness education strategies.
  3. Ability to demonstrate crisis management and consultation skills.
  4. Ability to develop outreach and prevention services that promote psychological wellness.
  5. Ability to present workshops and in-service trainings.
  6. Ability to initiate innovative service delivery strategies.
  7. Ability to demonstrate planning and organizational skills.

  8. Develop and implement behavioral management process for monitoring, evaluating, and managing both appropriate and inappropriate student behaviors.
  9. Address stressful events, created by hostile students by (a) maintaining emotional control, (b) listening without judgment or retaliation, (c) reasoning objectively and consistently, (d) keeping at the forefront the best interests of the student, and (e) maintaining professionalism and due process.

HIRING RANGE: Annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience. NOTE: The salary advertised with this position is based on the 2018-2019 salary schedule. Effective July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020, the position received an additional temporary 5% increase. On July 1, 2020 salaries reverted back to the 2018-2019 salary schedules.
