![]() STDT SVC ADVISOR 3 (Associate Director) Department Description The Center for African Diaspora Student Success (CADSS) ensures the provision of academic (curricular), social & cultural activities (co-curricular) support services to students of the African Diaspora and promotes independence and integrated participation in campus life. CADSS was designed to encourage and facilitate student involvement and success in campus life, student organizations, academic excellence, and community engagement. CADSS provides leadership training, confliction resolution, advisement, and advocacy for the diasporic community on the UC Davis campus. JOB SUMMARY Reporting directly to the Director of the Strategic African American Retention Initiative and the Center for African Diaspora Student Success (CADSS), the Associate Director position is responsible for functioning as the subject matter expert regarding all operational aspects of CADSS. The Associate Director will supervise and work directly with a team of student staff to ensure the provision of academic (curricular), social & cultural activities (co-curricular) support services to students of the African Diaspora visiting CADSS. The Associate Director will encourage and facilitate student involvement and success in campus life, student organizations, academic excellence, and community engagement. The position will support CADSS in providing culturally relevant opportunities in the areas of academic support, leadership training, conflict resolution, advisement, career development, counseling, and advocacy for the diasporic community on the UC Davis campus. POSITION INFORMATION PHYSICAL DEMANDS -Walk tours of buildings and climb stairs. -Lift and carry boxes of publications and equipment weighing up to 30 lbs. WORK ENVIRONMENT -UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco produces and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space. QUALIFICATIONS Required: -Educational/professional leadership experience in a higher education student services program, including supervision, budget and resource management. -Strong oral and written skills to communicate in a diverse environment at all levels, with tact and diplomacy in order to achieve program and campus goals. -Skills to analyze, interpret, and incorporate into the context of daily work activities and decision-making the intent of the laws, policies, and practices regarding under-represented students; knowledge of case studies, current research, practices and trends/developments in the field of student services in postsecondary education. -Knowledge of academic and administrative organizational structure within a complex higher education university or college structure including related programs, and general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, unit prerequisites, majors and minors). -Supervisory experience including interdisciplinary team-building experience including leadership, work distribution, accountability, communication, decision-making, problem solving and conflict management skills. Preferred: -Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs or related field, or an equivalent combination of experience and training. -Management experience to develop, implement, and evaluate student service programs that meet the needs of a diverse population of students with disabilities including the skills to design and produce workshops and other training programs for students, faculty and staff. -Analytical, problem solving and conflict resolution skills to analyze situations, initiate solutions and develop guidelines with coordinating groups and programs, and involving students and student interactions. -Experience developing, organizing and implementing educational programs, workshops or seminars to enhance student development and retention within the African Diaspora student community. -Experience working with African Diaspora alumni, community groups, parents, students and organizations; experience addressing the financial, emotional, and academic special needs of students of the African Diaspora in an institution of higher learning.
