New Canaan Country School seeks a maternity leave replacement for our grades 7-8 learning specialist. Ideal candidates would have a degree in special education and/or experience working with students that have documented specialized learning needs, such as language based disabilities, dyscalculia, executive dysfunction, and attentional challenges. The position will begin in early March with a target start date of Monday, March 8th. That first week is designed to allow for the replacement to work with the current teacher and get acclimated to the position and the school, while also meeting and working with the students. NCCS has spring break from March 15th-26th, with a return to school on Monday, March 29th. Total time of employment will be 10-11 weeks with the school year ending on June 16th.
The duties of the 7-8 Learning Specialist include but are not limited to: • Provide direct support to students in pull-out format o Teach 4 self-contained small group classes that meet for approximately 1-hour 4 days a week (3-5 students per class) o Work with students one-on-one and in small groups o Administer testing accommodations to students in grades 7 and 8 when needed • Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers • Guide teachers on how to differentiate instruction for a variety of learning styles • Serve as an advisor for 5 students- all of whom are in one of the learning support classes • Help and support teachers in implementing recommended classroom accommodations and interventions • Communicate with parents, tutors, specialists and teachers as needed • Attend division meetings • Attend meetings of Learning Resources Teachers • Attend weekly Grade Level Team meetings • Contribution to coaching and student life programs is welcomed
• Finds joy in working with children and in participating in school life; is kind and displays a healthy sense of humor • Is skilled in teaching and supporting students at a distance via platforms such as Zoom • Possesses a strategy-based, engaging teaching style; is competent with assistive technology • Understands and enjoys the unique nature of the age group • Demonstrates commitment to engaging with and learning from diverse backgrounds and experiences • Demonstrates successful teaching outcomes with students with learning differences • Demonstrates skills in communications and interpersonal relations within and across multiple constituencies
